Why is Brazil loaning $300mil to Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe has secured a $300m loan from Brazil to finance agriculture and boost crop production after successive years of food deficits, state media reported on Thursday.

The loan is part of Brazil's aid programme for Africa, the state-controlled Herald newspaper said.

Brazil must have some debt headed its way as part of the world cup preparation, how can it afford to give away (they can't seriously expect repayment?) so much money in such an idiotic manner?

Money laundering in a way. Brazil is new BFFs with China and China is getting quite a bit of stick about buying Africa. China gives Brazil money, Brazil 'loans' money to Zim. Zim puts up some mineral collateral - China scores.
 
Wonder how much of that money will actually make it into the hands of the common man, mostly likely all be absorbed by the Mugabi and his henchmen.

Makes sense. And I suppose this is a traditional African solution - the handout.

No - this is worse. The handout is something that they get from the West. They invite a few photographers over to take pictures of vultures following fly infested children around, the pictures are shown to make westerners feel guilty and money is raised. The West is tired of this game.

The Chinese have no guilt. They put in the inifrastructure and supply equipment and when it all goes pear shaped the only people who can read the instrucution manuals are the Chinese. They then take back their asset and run it. For an example of what I am talking about look at the Freedom Railway - a rail line from Dar es Salam to Kapiri Mposhi.

The common man won't see cent. Mugabe and his hence men are way too greedy

Yes also their former leader who's party still runs the country blamed the 2008 economic downturn on " blue eyed white people" which gives you some insight into their mentality. So no surprise comrade Bob is being bailed out.
 
Brazil is an "ally" to Zimbambwe, believe it or not, Zimbambwe is mineral rich and it didn't always be this f'd up. This is an investment.

If Brazil was not going to give the loan, I believe Venezuela was going to step in.
