Looking for a LCD Monitor

Hi,

I am looking to buy an LCD monitor. It will be mostly used for gaming but will also be used for watching DVD's and TV episodes.

Other than 8ms respones times what are the other things to look out for?

What does 500:1 and 1000:1 mean on some of the specifications?

Any help would be great.

Look for a digital DVI input - much better picture quality than analog VGA. Also make sure your display card comes with a DVI output, because the picture quality will be lost with a DVI <-> VGA converter.

Also look for the highest brightness and contrast specs. The contrast is normally given as xxx:1 - while the brightness is given as xxx cd/m2.

A better response time for gaming/dvd/movies is the Viewsonic VX924 with a rating of 3ms. http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/xseries/vx924/

Almost not true, the difference is hardly noticeable, if there is any at all

different manufacturers measure that in different ways, LCD claiming 3ms response doesn't necessarily means it is faster. Besides that for smooth DVD/games/movies you need <= 16ms, not 3ms or even 8ms, I have 12ms LCDs at home and there is absolutely no ghosting or any other artifacts whatsoever no matter how fast the action is!
