Hi,

Looking for some advice wrt frequent disconnects on my ADSL Line. What I've done is as follows :

1. My office is situated some 2km from my house and about 500m from the telephone exchange. There I have a business 1024 line with a Telkom supplied 4 port Marconi router/modem. The ISP is TelkomInternet (I know, I know). The line remains constantly connected and with SASA indicates a break every 24 hrs (normally about 6am).

2. At home I have a Home 512 line with a Telkom supplied Marconi WIFI 4 port router modem. The house is about 2km from exchange and is the same one used by the office. The ISP here is MWEB (????#$#$). This line using SASA indicates breaks at about 9pm, 1 pm and 7am.

3. To try and identify the problem I reconfigured my home router to the TelkomInternet ISP and ran it concurrent with the office ADSL. SASA indicated 24 hr service with a break about 6am.

4. Once I go back to Mweb settings on home line I get disconnects about three time a day.

5. The indications are that breaks are caused by :

a. Different modem ie WIFI modem is giving problems.
b. ISP is problem (MWEB vs TelkomInternet)
c. Distance from exchange.

6. Can some one advise me on how to narrow the problem down or indicate which of para 5 is likely cause?

Thank You

causes that may be indicated are :

Any business line gets preference over the home user line. I could be due to this fact that you get less disconnects

Line Type can also be a factor, its every hard to be able to pin point the exact problem without being able to test both lines for 24 hours

I get disconnects about three time a day
What happens after the disconnect - does it reconnect?

Surely these are normal resets? (if it reconnects.)

kilo39, Thanks for the reply. I don't know, I thought service was only meant to be disconnected once every 24 hrs. Yes does reconnectm sometimes takes a bit of time though

telkom does a reset every day (probably in the small print!) MWeb do far more - in fact your times look about right.

far more knowledgeable dweebs on this forum - where?

You shouldn't even see the reset - you are noticing it because it is logged - but your disconnect should be momentary - shouldn't have to struggle to reconnect unless something is flaky somewhere.

then again - this is just my 2c!

... and (observation) this thread should be in the hardware, software, technical help forum - maybe get more help there?

10 to 15 mins is not right - you are losing your connection.

/edit/ maybe mods will move it?

That would point straight at the isp. The 10minutes to reconnect could be explained by mwebs auth-server not letting u log on... strange, but who knows. Try switching from mweb to another isp

Thanks for all advice so far. The green light on my modem keeps flashing for about 10 mins then becomes steady after the disconnects. Would this still indicate ISP or is this a telephone line thing? Thanx

Hard factory reset is always last resort. Pulling the power on the modem and letting it reboot never did no harm.

Phone, email mweb, telkom - ask them to verify reset times - and query the reconnect issue - query the issue with your isp.

you've got 2 separate modems in 2 different locations on 2 different accounts and both have the same problem?

MMmm.

but both going through the same exchange. Even bigger Mmm.
