Sports minister Fikile Mbalula failed to buy more time to comment on a City Press story implicating him in a sex scandal on Saturday, the department said.

“We were not trying to stop the story from being published ... only to have more time to send our comments to City Press, and we were too late,” said spokesman Paena Galane.

City Press editor Ferial Haffajee said Mbalula had not answered questions sent to him by the paper on Thursday afternoon.

Galane said the minister received the questions on Thursday night and was “in consultation” on Friday.

He said when Mbalula approached the Johannesburg High Court on Saturday, the application could be heard only at 6pm.

“And that was too late because City Press says it goes to print at 6pm tonight (Saturday).”

When asked if the minister would still submit his response after the story was published, Galane said he would not, because it would be too late.

On Saturday, headline posters read “Minister In Sex Scandal”.

He admitted screwing her while separated from his wife so what is the big deal?
A lot of other people are getting a bit on the side and nobody cares so why should he be singled out?

Falling pregnant is at least 50% her fault (if she actually is pregnant) but my gut feel is that it was a deliberate ploy to extort money from him.

Maybe when no cash is forthcoming she will have a miscarriage in the not too distant future.

Separated but not divorced, a big difference.

But to fall into a honey trap, that's plain stupid.

Both parties are in the wrong here; him for infidelty and her for extortion.

The bottom line is this: Mbalula is a cabinet minister and as such any dalliances are of public interest, therefore a newspaper should report the story, BUT this is not a Sunday front page scandal (maybe City Press supports the Bulls). It is impossible not to see a setup involved both in the potential for extortion but also in people having an axe to grind against Mbalula - a scandal would be evidence that the woman is in fact a Luthuli house honeytrap (the ANC wouldn't be the first organization that ensures its high flyers are entrapped in an affair as it gives them leverage).
On my view of matrimony and sexual responsibility he was committing adultry and the "but we were separated" statement doesn't hold, the fact of the matter is that first and foremost that is an issue between the spouses and it is probable that his wife already knows and that it is related into the reconcilation bid they have. There is no wiff of trying to cover the story up rather an attempt to buy a bit of time - which could have been to put out some fires with relatives and what not. For goodness sake the Sunday Times and Sunday Independent have the story with comment from the minister.

Mbalula, being a Minister, is high profile and ought to be a role model. He preaches safe sex. Since he did not practice what he preaches, this is news. IMO it shows that he is a two faced liar.

Makes sense to me

My take on this is that he is a high profile minister and the sex scandal story is of public interest. At the same time people should be careful not to say he must be fired from his post as sports minister. A lot of people cheat, I'm sure a lot of small business owners cheat but that doesn't make them bad people? I believe that Fikile has done the right thing to apologize to the nation, he is also within his right to ask for privacy. We shouldn't dig deeper now into his private life just because of this. He didn't commit any crime, the only regrettable thing he did was to preach faithfulness and he does the opposite.

The newspaper said he had sex without a condom, twice, how do they know this? Did they get that piece of information from the extortionist and then published that piece of information as the truth? I have a problem with the City Press for publishing that Fikile had sex without a condom, twice, as if the City Press was there. It is good though that City press published the story. As a normal citizen of SA, I respect Fikili as a hardworking sports minister but will never listen to him when he talks about being faithful and all.

The prez has how many? Or does it not count when they know about each other?
