Mbombela - A specialist in the area of jackal research accidentally killed himself in a freak shooting accident over the weekend.

Dr Paul Möller, 60, was alone at a shooting range on Saturday morning when he apparently stepped on a loose shoelace and fell down while holding his .357 revolver.

As he fell down, a shot went off and hit him in the right temple.

Möller was to have taken part in a shooting exercise about 12km outside town on Saturday morning.

He was the safety official of the shooting range and had left early in the morning to prepare the shooting range.

Johan Scott, chairperson of the Duiker branch of the South African Hunting Association, said Möller’s death was a huge shock.

He was found by members of another shooting club at about 07:20, lying on his stomach with his revolver next to him.

Möller was described as a true outdoors person who loved nature. He was an expert on jackals with a doctorate in animal behaviour.

He was survived by his partner, Adrie de Wet.

A police spokesperson said an inquest would be held.

Mandatory comment: "More to the story" or "Darwin award nominee"?

Possibly more to the story. It's easy to shoot someone in the temple and then untie his shoelaces to create a scene.

Weird, someone familiar with guns, you would think would be more careful.

Trying to think how you fall like that.. Posible.. not easy but that is why it is called an accident.
Most people fail when they do this to themselves.

Ja, I would say "more to the story" because if your shoe lace is untied at a shooting range, you put the gun down and tie your shoe lace.

Well i dont know 1 range safety officer that would walk around with their firearm with the safety off.

Definately there is more to this.

More to this without a doubt.

For someone who was going to be the Safety Official at a competition, walking around with a loaded weapon that doesn't have the safety on (if the revolver has a safety).. just sounds odd...

I have a few guns and i would say there is a bit more to this story ( one is a smith & wesson model 66 .357 mag )

He was walking with the gun in his hand while walking to check the targets he shot at I assume.

With that as he stumbled he used his hand to break his fall with the gun in one hand. As his hands landed on the ground the shot went off.

That is why people are suppose to remove magazines, put gun on safety and put it down on the table.

This was an accident that could have been prevented.
