Kindly advise on ADSL sharing with router/WiFi

I have a desktop PC connected to my ADSL line using a Billion 5102S router. This is set up correctly and I can surf the net from this desktop computer

The desktop also has a USB WiFi stick and I have a wireless network connection to my laptop computer. The wireless network was up and running before my ADSL installation and I can share files between the desktop and the laptop. (I even had a dial-up internet connection that could be shared),

I cannot however, surf the internet via ADSL from the laptop computer.

Can anyone advise me as to how to surf the web from the laptop via the WiFi connection to the desktop?

Bridge your connections

How is your PC connected to the ADSL router? I assume via LAN cable somehow. What I would do is go into your network settings and bridge the normal wired LAN connection and the wifi connection. You can also use internet connection sharing under your advanced tab of the LAN connection properties, but bear in mind that it resets your lan connection ip to 192.168.0.1 - make sure this fits in with your router OK.
 
What you want to do , me thinks, is to share the ADSL connection on your desktop. To do this just go into your Wireless network connection setting on the desktop. On the advanced tab check the first box under the Internet Connection Sharing

Guys, thanks for the assistance.
I sat the whole day and tried various things and could not get it to work.
I tried the bridging and the ICS and still could not get it to work.

Eventually, when I was about to give up, it suddenly started working. Don't ask me how. If the problem repeats itself, I am not sure if I will be able to fix it.

At the moment, this is how it works:
Run WinXP network setup on both machines.
Enable ICS sharing on DESKTOP (IP defaults to 192.168.0.1)
Set the LAPTOP to OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY.

In addition to this, the subnet mask must be set to 255.255.255.0 and the PREFERRED DNS SERVER (on both machines) must be set to 192.168.1.254 (IP address of router).

Thanks to STUART and WILLIE of BILLION for their help and patience too.

Help again

Just as I figured - on rebooting the laptop, a new IP address is assigned that doesn't allow me to connect to the WIRELESS NETWORK ,or if it does connect, I cannot PING the DESKTOP or the ROUTER.

Does anyone have any suggestions e.g. what manual IP address can I give the LAPTOP?
 
Assign the IP address 192.168.0.20 (last number must just not be 0, 1, 254 or 255) to the laptop with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
 
Don't bridge any connections... Only use ICS, enable for WiFi connection, enable DHCP on notebook. DNS & Gateway should be auto assigned and set to 192.168.0.1 though...
Another option is to configure the Billion Router to dial the PPPoE connection for you - then you need to setup an Access Point for the notebook pc. DHCP on both machines then

I have tried starting all over as follows:
1. I have set up an ad-hoc wireless LAN with no encryption/authentication on a DESKTOP (WIFI USB stick) and a LAPTOP (built-in WIFI).
2. I have chosen static IP addresses - desktop 192.169.1.2; laptop 192.169.1.1.
3. The router is connected to the desktop and has an IP address of 192.168.1.254.

At this stage, the desktop can surf the net via the router, the 2 computers are connected to the WLAN and can ping each other, but the laptop cannot surf the net.

ICS has been enabled - it defaults the desktop to 192.168.0.1 - I can manually change this back to 192.169.1.1 and the computers can ping each other, but the laptop still cannot surf the net.

Billion say that the IP addresses of the computers must be in the 192.168.1.X range. Therefore, I have changed the IP config of the computers as follows:
DESKTOP:
IP: 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.254
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.254
LAPTOP:
IP: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.254
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.254

At this point, I am stuck - desktop surfs the net, ICS is enabled, both computers can ping each other, laptop cannot ping router or surf the net.

Any advice???
If I throw in the towel at this stage, should I purchase a USB ADSL modem and share the dial-up, or should I go for the Billion 7202G modem/router with built-in wireless AP?

Rather go for the modem/router with wireless AP - I've been running like this for 6 months now without problems.
 
I saw you close to success.

ROUTER
* keep router's IP as 192.168.1.254
* config DHCP ranges 192.168.1.10 - 250 / 255.255.255.0

DESKTOP:
set the NIC connected to router as:
* Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address
* config USB Wifi key in Ad Hoc mode, setup basic security staff (it will not affect internet sharing)
* enable ICS on NIC which connected to ADSL router

LAPTOP:
* setup Wifi connection in Ad Hoc mode and connect to ICS host
* Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address

KEY Point: Router's IP shouldn't use 192.168.0.x, it will confilct with ICS default setting, that's why you made it work once when you change the IPs manually, but everything will back to default when reboot.

I've seen no mention of a WAP in your network description, for a wireless network to exist you must have a access point. You said your desktop also has a usb wifi stick, are you referring to a usb wireless nic? How did you manage to get your desktop pc and the laptop to communicate while you had a dialup connection?

The user mobileallover had the solution you needed, dhcp and all setting to automatic.

Can you detail all the hardware in your network configuration?

Tried your suggestion and reset everything to default. It works!!!
Can't believe how easy it was; and all the time I was trying to manually assign IP addresses etc.

By the way, my hardware is:
Billion5102S router.
I do not have a wireless access point. It is an ad-hoc WLAN.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P desktop (P4 3.0ghz 512MB) with a USB Siemens Gigaset WLAN adapter.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO A laptop (Centrino 2.0ghz 1024MB) with built in WLAN.
Windows ICS allows for dial-up connections to be seen over the WLAN and to be shared.

I must say, at one point I did have the setuop working, where the laptop could surf the net through the router via the WLAN - problem is I dont remember the settings and when I rebooted, everything was gone.
