Dumb criminals nabbed

Three KwaMashu hijackers have earned the title “KZN’s Dumbest Criminals” after they answered a cellphone they had stolen during a hijacking and let slip their exact location to the victim, who then alerted police.
And then one of them later went for the Dumb and Dumber title, by flagging down a police car and attempting to con them.
The drama started late on Saturday when Bongani Msomi, 28, was hijacked on Nandi Drive. He said they had held him at gunpoint and robbed him of his white Toyota Tazz, cash and his cellphone.
Msomi, left stranded at the side of the road, ran to a nearby house where he contacted his brother, Musa, who arrived a short while later to fetch him.
“I then contacted the Inanda police station and reported the incident. They circulated that my car had been stolen. Fortunately constables Sihle Gumede and Sibonelo Ntombela, of the Durban Dog Unit, were nearby and responded.”
A police source said someone had told the dog unit members he had seen the vehicle travelling at high speed towards KwaMashu.
Informant
The two policemen were told by an informant that the hijacked vehicle was at the KwaMashu Men’s Hostel. They drove around for a while but could not spot the car.
Msomi then tried to call his cellphone which was stolen during the hijacking.
“He made the call from his brother’s phone. Fortunately for him, one of the hijackers answered the phone. He asked him their location. Without thinking or realising what he was saying, the hijacker gave him their exact location.
“He did not even verify who the caller was. This gang has to be the province’s dumbest criminals,” said the police source.
The hijacker told Msomi that they were a Emaklabishini, in D-Section, KwaMashu.
Msomi confirmed the call and said once he had the hijackers’ location he alerted police.
Gumede and Ntombela immediately rushed to the area and spotted the stolen car.
“When the hijackers saw the police vehicle, they opened fire. Even the driver, shot at police while trying to make a getaway. He eventually abandoned the car and fled into nearby bushes. All three were shot during the exchange of fire.”
Two hijackers were arrested at the scene.
“A short distance away, the hijacker who fled, managed to flag down a passing police van. He told them he had been shot (in the shoulder) during a hijacking. The unsuspecting cops then took him to a nearby clinic for treatment. Fortunately, the same cops went back to assist the dog unit members,” the police source said.
“They told them they had been delayed because they had to assist a gunshot victim.
“The members then put the pieces together and realised it was the hijacker who had escaped. The police went back to the clinic and the hijacker was arrested. He was positively identified by the victim.”
A stolen police firearm was recovered from one of the hijackers.
All three suspects are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court, later this week on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and possession on an unlicensed firearm.
Msomi said he was grateful for the swift response by the dog unit members and was happy to have his vehicle back.
Provincial SAPS spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said investigations were continuing.

Hey, these guys are beyond stupid. I was once mugged there in the early 90's on my way home from varsity near Thembalihle railway station. My wallet had no money except my weekly Metrorail train ticket and my student card. They asked me for the pin for the card. I made up some random numbers and off they went.
I mean WTF...where did they ever see a bank card with a picture on it, LOL?
