What will it take to upgrade SA's 1MB to a 6MB line??

My brother in norway has a lovely Fibre optical cable running into his house where he has a 6MB Connection.


For SA to upgrade do we need to run Fibre Optical Cable everywhere??
 
firstly it's the government then the damn regulations then teleskum! Then we home free.... urm ok that'll never happen :(
 
Was thinking more on the hardware needs...

Afaik our normal copper can run up2 8Mbps...
 
Yeah, that's true torn. To get ADSL2+ speeds (24mbps max.) you need to convert the normal copper line into something else? Certainly not optical fibre though.

ADSL and VDSL only runs over copper lines.

If the DSLAM doesn't supports ADSL2+, then they need to upgrade those. Otherwise it's as simple as configuring the DSLAM.

But, bandwidth on Telkoms side might be a problem, so I don't think they'll go for 8Mb just yet. I think we might see a improvement during the 4th quarter of the year. Don't ask where my info come from though ;)
 
It will take a miracle.
Telkom already think their 1024 option is the fastest available in the world...or did you miss the TV adverts?
 
fibre optic cable for 6mb, thats a bit much, overkill for 6mb i should think, where does he live, suburbs or out in the country side? does he lots of interference? MT-RJ ot LC connectors?

I'd like some of that cabling if it's fibre optic
 
The current hardware we use can go to 8Mb. The length of our local leads wont allow that in most cases, which is why were running slower.

I dont know what the specs on ADSL2+ are, but i can bet you its going to cost a replacement of your modem and of telkoms dslam. That is a huge cost on their side, and they just wont offer it anytime soon.
