A Pretoria East mother suffered a triple blow this past weekend. First she was subjected to insult and humiliation by a group of drunk men, then lost her unborn baby as a result and then discovered on Monday that the men had been released on bail just hours after their arrest.

Elizabeth Matshaka encountered the five in their Nissan Navara along Hamilton Street on Saturday night. The trouble starting when she was forced to swerve out of their way when they almost bumped into her Mercedes-Benz SLK at about 8.45pm.

“I was with my daughters aged 13 and six and their 44-year-old nanny,” she said on Monday.

At the traffic lights the two cars stood side by side, and, she said, they were drinking and clearly intoxicated.

She looked at them and shook her head, she said. The next thing they were pouring alcohol all over her car, shouting at her at the top of their voices.

“They started insulting me, saying I was driving a car that was on credit and as a black woman, I could afford nothing.”

The 30-year-old mother turned into Schoeman Street. They followed her, riding alongside her and matching her speed, fast and slow, while all the while hurling insults and racial slurs at her.

Her main concern was for her two girls, she said. The feeling of helplessness as the men continued to menace her, threatened to drive her into a panic.

“I was scared. The fear only got worse as the men drove alongside my car, driving fast when I did and slowing down when I did… because I didn’t know what to do, where to go.”

As Matshaka turned into Grosvenor Street they still followed her. “They came close to the left side of my car, bumping it slightly and scratching both left doors as they pulled alongside me.”

One of them reached out and bent the side mirror.

When the 13 year old, who was sitting in the passenger seat took out her phone to take a picture of them they smashed the window with a beer jug.

“The glass broke and hurt my daughter. Then I decided to stop before they drove me off the road.”

By that time, other motorists had noticed the hassle between the two cars. When they approached the bakkie sped off and some drivers gave chase.

The men were allegedly found trying to remove their licence plates on the side of the road, where they were apprehended and dragged back to the scene where they were arrested.

A Sunnyside police officer said: “Five men were arrested and charged with crimen injuria and malicious damage to property. One faces an additional charge of drunk driving.”

She said the five were released after a prosecutor, on standby, made a bail application for them.

“Investigations are under way. When that is ready they will be subpoenaed to appear in court,” said the police officer, who is not authorised to speak to the media.

Matshaka and her children were referred for psychotherapy by their doctor, for stress and trauma.

She said she was shocked when she got to court on Monday only to learn that the men were out on bail and not on on Monday’s court roll. “No one explained why they were back on the street so soon after the incident,” she said.

She said she woke up in a lot of pain and bleeding on Sunday. A visit to the doctor revealed she had lost her six-week unborn baby which, she said, doctors linked to the trauma of the previous night.

shame man that is terrible, criminals get caught and let off like it was some exercise at the victims expense, those drunken dog turds need to pay with jail time.
Booze mixed with most things in life ends up in a mess or tragedy.

Many women loses their baby up until 6 weeks. Some does not even know that they were pregnant. Proving it will be difficult unfortunately.
 
This is sick and I hope they get the book thrown at them.
The bakkie should be confiscated and given to some poor dude to make an honest living as this was used as a item of threat and the owner of the bakkie should lose his license forever and never be able to apply for finance on any vehicle again. Just as when you lose a firearm through malpractice.

Legally speaking an unborn child (no matter what age) has rights on condition that it is born, however I don't think the man slaughter charge would stick as they did not physically touch her, as it was emotional shock that killed the child.
