And just for interest:

HD DVD:
- single layer = 15 GB
- dual-layer = 30 GB
triple-layer disc is in development = 45GB of storage

Blu-ray:
- single layer = 25GB
- dual-layer = 50GB
- triple-layer skipped
- four-layers = 100GB

Have heard that HD DVD is more robust to scratches etc, while Blu-ray isn't (requires an additional polymer coating of some kind - which makes it more expensive)
 
Blu-ray is more expensive, both the players and discs. The discs have to be thinner and will be more vulnerable to damage.

Will the average person be able to tell the difference? Will they care. VHS to DVD was a huge leap, just as vinyl to CD was, in quality, convenience and durability, but these newer formats don't offer any obvious benefits for the average person.

Blu-ray side had already won contracts with twice as many Hollywood film makers as those on the HD DVD standard

They love to trot that one out, but it is meaningless. The studios may have been talked into believing blu-ray is the future, but they're going to release their material on whatever format the consumer is willing to buy.

If these guys want to get blu-ray out into the market they're going to have to carry the added costs, to bring blu-ray down to the price of HD-DVD.

I'd guess that most consumers are going to wait and see what happens. I won't invest any money in another format until I know which one is going to have the most support. Backwards compatibility is going to be critical - there is no reason to buy older movies and televisions on an HD format when DVD is already showing the flaws in the older material.
