Telkom has responded stating that based on the economies of scale achieved by the American and European markets it is conceivable that hosting in South Africa would be more expensive.

Telkom further states that “the current network architecture does not allow a split between local and International traffic. As the network operator, Telkom can only provide details on the total access usage.”

Fck - don't these people know what ip's ranges are being called - more brain dead surgery for our technology verkrampt telco. A 3 year old knows whether they are 'international' or not. Makes me sick, sick to death. :mad:
 
don't you basically just have to keep track at the gateway going out & in, and in telkoms case, the transparent proxy.

Weren't they doing that a while back before they imposed capping on local bandwidth aswell??

It seems that this "Broadband Officer" has no clue of what he is dealing with. I can just imagine him sitting there in his nice office, behind his huge desk on a nice comfy chair with KFC on the table when he gets a phone call, "The DSLAM in Pretoria has gone down!", he then very intelligently replies, "The what???"

Fire this idiot already! In fact dismantle Telkom! They can provide local only accounts if they cannot differentiate between local and international traffic.

This the same company that used to tell us they couldn't tell whether a call connected so they charged you whether or not anyone answered at the other end. They're either liars or completely incompetent. Probably both. If they were a political party they'd be the ANC.
 
Local isn't good, it's just local. You can't expect South Africans to restrict themselves to what is produced locally. You'd have to get international material hosted locally. Most of what is produced everywhere is garbage, but the sheer volume means it is easy to find a vast amount of good material.

Given our extremely favourable exchange rate against major foreign currencies we should have a booming market of foreigners hosting in South Africa. For that to happen the government would have to put their words into action and do whatever is necessary to make sure that hosting in South Africa is the cheapest in the world.

If they wanted to boost the production of local material they should be seriously promoting the creation of a local movie studio centre. So far though few countries have ever come even close to creating their own local version of Hollywood.

If this wasn't SA none of these people would have jobs -. One - any half decent person would resign - after obviously being so clueless. Or two - they would be fired for incompetence. None of these things happen. But then very little happens anyway.:mad:
and worse scenario - is that they get employed in the first place. But suppose if employers as dumb as them then no one knows any different. :(
 
On my website alone which averages 12 gigs pm it was a difference of R2000 per month local, and R250 per year internationally, guess where I went.
Things have changed a bit since then but not much.
Locally also a 100 megs is regarded as a huge amount of HD space.
Overseas HD space starts at 1 gig as entry level.
I also wanted to get a .co.za but that was a lot extra, also they insisted on reverse DNS, what a croc of ****, internationally I got a .com with no hassels.

Telkom are crazy man.

I was "fortunate" enough to have a server in SA where the bandwidth cost only 9c per mb, over 5000, but after my invoice skyrocket from an awerage of R800 over several months up to R9700 I was forced to move my server abroad.

300GB bandwidth plus 2 x Dual 2,8 Xeon CPU's Server cost me less than R3000.

In SA, at the almost lowest fee of 9c per mb over 5000, such bandwidth as above alone would cost R27 000. (300 000 mb x 9c = R27 000)

R3000 international versus R27 000+ local is simply crazy and that's just for ONE person.
 
Do any well known SA corporations host their servers overseas?

The only country I can think of that goes out of its way to make sure that they only have local internet content is China...
