Steam - CoD:MW2 - Why does it need to re-download the whole game every weekend?

I have the full version of CoD:MW2 installed on my Son's PC. Can anyone tell me why it wants to re-download / update the entire game every weekend?
I mean that's 11 Gigs. Fortunately, I have uncapped, but I can't do anything else the whole day Saturday cos it just wants to take the entire day to re-download the entire game? Does Steam realize how much of my bandwidth and time they are wasting?
 
Steam is designed that way. It can't patch files, only replace them with newer versions.

Sucks for SA...but that is the way it is.

What would help is if one SA person volunteers to generate a patch. i.e. One person downloads it & then generate a set of differences. Shouldn't be too difficult...patching engines are out there anyway.

EDIT: It that way for 2 reasons. Overseas people don't care & steam doesn't need to keep track of multiple versions & patch sets, only the latest.
 
Mine doesn't redownload every weekend, Gary. Maybe something is wonky, you could try backing up all the games and uninstalling steam and then doing a fresh install.

Also, steam is changing its patching system.
 
Ja, I can understand the need for every time a new patch comes out, but this is ridiculous. The poor kid works hard at school all week, then looks forward to playing some games on Saturday and he can't cos it takes the whole day to update. And he's scared to interfere with it, cos it will just start again from the bottom.
 
Yup something does sound wonky.If you know anyone with the game,get them to do a backup and restore it from that backup on your son's pc.Happened to me once where it started downloading from scratch for no reason.Remember to do an uninstall of MW2 before restore.
 
Try deleting the clientregistry.blob. It's a steam file that occassionally goes wonky and downloading it against will take a few minutes.
 
in the meantime you could do the download on Friday night for him and leave the computer running so he can play on saturday.

I saw the SAME problem last month, nephew's friend trying to install from retail disks... no matter what, everytime he tried to install, steam wanted to download all 11GB... when it finally installed, after a few days, voila, again, another 11GB download... it was driving him mad and his parents to the poor-house.

The following stopped the insanity and he could install from the disks without any online 11GB downloads... also has been playing for over a month without any additional steaming download of 11GB.

Maybe it will work for you ?? Worth a try...

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc

Log in to Steam and click on Library.

Right-click on the COD MW2 game, select “Delete local content”, and confirm.

Insert the first disc into your computer.

Close Steam (Steam > Exit).

Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install X:

Replace X: with the CD/DVD drive letter you are installing from .

Press OK.

Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved.

Your installation should continue from the local disc and not online.

Also, once installed, in Steam, untick the option to keep the game automatically updated online.
