Can someone help me out? I have a HP6550b which comes with a DisplayPort output. I want to connect it to my LCD TV.

I am aware that I will need a DisplayPort to HDMI converter or some type of cable. However, I am not sure what to get. Would audio also be channelled through this cable/converter?

I found some converters from StarTech, however I'm not sure about compatibility and local availability.

TIA

this should do what you want

the ones you posted don't combine audio

Wow... that's a bit pricey. Is that my only option, VGA-HDMI? The laptop does come with a DisplayPort..

After some further googling, the laptop's chipset is capable of delivering High Definition Audio via DisplayPort, however I'm not sure if HP has disabled it.

Thanks for the suggestion, much appraciated - at least I have some idea on what I need to get.

honestly i am not familiar with a display port but someone should be along to help i am sure :)

The licensing company overseeing the HDMI specification has confirmed that some Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are illegal, and could be recalled.

However, the existing spec "contemplates" a cable connector that would be equivalent to the existing products on the market, which include a male DisplayPort connector and a female HDMI connector. That may make any legal issues largely moot, especially if the existing cables are formally brought under the spec's umbrella.

Maybe why you can't find :wtf: ;)

Edit : Okay, that refers to the mini version only.

"So how does one connect a DP product to an HDMI HDTV? The HDMI Specification does contemplate a DP à HDMI receptacle dongle that can plug into a DP product and has an HDMI female receptacle on the other end," Wan added. "To us, this then is nothing more than a source product whose HDMI signal out of the female connector can be tested in the same way the HDMI signal out of a female receptacle can be tested on a Blu-ray player, or game console, or any other source product."

Is this legal?

Yes, it does audio, I have a HP6540b with a DP. I use a DP to hdmi connector, and have an HDMI cable Male to male. (into my TV) carries picture and audio fine :)
