Do AC games follow chronologically or can you play them in any order without losing on the 'story'. ie is it ok to play Revelations before Brotherhood for example?

You'll have to play it in order to avoid missing pieces of the story. Basically AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations follow the Ezio story arc, with bits and pieces of Altair's story thrown in (especially in Revelations). The Desmond story arc also follows in chronological order.

Thanks. I don't have 1 & 2 so it looks like I'll be playing 3 and then 4.

They were on the Steam Sale a couple days ago if I remember. You should have picked them up then.

The first 2 are quite cheap now. I really wouldn't recommend mixing up the order as you'll be missing out quite a bit on character growth.

I just finished sequence 1 of brotherhood and I can see I'm missing out on the history/story.

Awesome game though!
