Thailand floods increase demand for SSDs

I've been saying it since this whole thing started. These floods are going to cause SERIOUS financial harm to hard-drive manufacturers.

Seagate increased their prices because they can and now they are alienating customers. Once you go SSD you don't go back.
 
I've been demanding a SSD for a long time. Doesn't mean I have the money for one.

I'm thinking of just getting a 120gig SSD and sticking with my harddrives that are floating around the house for storage (movies, music, and games that aren't too demanding/used infrequently).

I just seem to find myself opening up too many programs now that take forever to open up :(.
 
One can only hope an increase in demand brings the prices down...
 
The 'death of the HDD' is not even close. Capacity and price wise SSDs can't compete, and as soon as HAMR is introduced you will see HDD capacity increase dramatically. HDDs are going nowhere anytime soon.

Exactly. Not to mention they're ticking timebombs with the limited number of read and write operations. The technology is nowhere near ready to replace hard drives yet.

HDD's are time bombs too. I just hope the price of the SSD comes down soon... So that I can get some more :)

Oh, no doubt we will eventually move away from mechanical drives, it's inevitable. I'm just saying we're not there yet. You just can't ignore the MASSIVE difference in price per GB, even with the new ludicrous hard drive prices.

By the way, most SSD manufacturers offer a tool to see how much lifetime your drive still has left, like my OCZ.

Also, what xera said. If you think MLC drives (which 99.9% of us use) are expensive, take a look at SLC-based drives. Yikes.
 
IC has a 2tb Seagate external HDD on special for R1000. But check it's ratings on Newegg :o

Also use OCZ -- love the speed improvement.

Well yes, but they are awesome speedwise. Unfortunately it's not much good if you can't afford space to copy lots of data to. Kind of like having a 10Mbit ADSL connection with one of those "cap" things I keep hearing about.

True, but hardly when you compare HDD failure rate to SSD failure rate.

Better the devil you know...

I mean rather HDD than DVDs, right?
