Cape Town offers free Internet access

re free net access from libraries, about time. Its a real useful thing to have in the US - as well as letting anyone who needs quick net access, the ability to get/send mail - without any ridiculously expensive costs..
well done Cape Town..
now Jhb? Pta? Dbn?

I frequent the public library in Cape Town City Hall. I saw the computers for the last couple of months. They are always very popular. I think it is a real good thing and a major step forward for the libraries. I will have a look today and see what kind of setup they use. I would think it is ADSL ...

Now why don't they chuck out the old VHS tapes and LPs (and donote them to a museum) and make space for more computers. ;-)

At least it is one more "up yours" to Telkom - a small one, but every little nick drains more blood.

seen this in a number of libraries + some cool online services like being able to renew books

local library is twice as popular these days

I assume that means you have to stand in a queue and only use their computers?

Wot good is that? No wireless?

If you already have a computer, then you are not their target market. You have not seen the computers or the typical users yet, obviously. Not your fault. You probably live outside Cape Town. ;-)

You are right, I missed the plot.
It's a good step in the right direction and great for those without pc's of their own.

However it would be nice when doing research, to be able to download, bookmark, etc etc on one's own pc as well - wireless routers are not exactly all that expensive - it's the bandwidth /capping where the expense lies. (Thanks to you-know-who of course)

I recently saw an AJAX web site that does bookmarks ... was one hell of a nice site. Wished I bookmarked it. (The irony)
