Skyrim on the PS3 might be broken forever

If you’re playing Skyrim on the PC or Xbox 360, you’re having a great time, there’s no doubt about that. Sure the PC may have access to some mind-bending visuals and mods, but at least us console gamers still get a smooth, fantastic experience.

Wait, what’s that PS3 owners? Your game freezes and slows down more than Stephen Hawking when his wheelchair hasn’t been charged overnight? That’s terrible for you guys, and it looks like the issue might not be resolved any time soon, due to the hardware of the PS3 itself.

Fallout New Vegas developer Joshua Sawyer of Obsidian explained in a personal Q&A on Formspring that the divided memory pool of the console was responsible for the problems in the Skyrim engine. Both Fallout 3 and Skyrim on PS3 suffer from this, when the increasing of size in a save-game would cause the title to perform terribly.

“The Xbox 360 has a unified memory pool: 512 megs of RAM usable as system memory or graphics memory”, Sawyer said. "The PS3 has a divided memory pool: 256 megs for system, 256 for graphics. It’s the same total amount of memory, but not as flexible for a developer to make use of”.

“As with Fallout 3 and Skyrim, the problems are most pronounced on the PS3 because the PS3 has a divided memory pool. The longer you play a character, the more bit differences on objects (characters, pencils on tables, containers, etc.) get saved off and carried around in memory. I think we’ve seen save games that are pushing 19 megs, which can be really crippling in some areas”.

But hey, we’ve got the power of the internet and instant patches available straight from the developers themselves, don’t we? According to Bethesda however, this issue with the PS3 will not be an easy fix unfortunately.

“It’s not like someone wrote a function and put a decimal point in the wrong place or declared something as a float when it should have been an int,” Sawyer said. “We’re talking about how the engine fundamentally saves off and references data at run time”.

“Restructuring how that works would require a large time commitment. Obsidian also only had that engine for a total of 18 months prior to Fallout: New Vegas being released, which is a relatively short time to understand all of the details of how the technology works”.

Bethesda has commented directly yet regarding the massive PS3 problem, but the developer has made mention of releasing a title update to fix minor issues soon, while additional patches that will hopefully not break the game again, are scheduled for release next year after the holidays are done.

Does this finally settle the argument about which console is better ?

512 megs of RAM !!!

Waahahahahahahah... you should upgrade that... wait Wahahahahahahahhahaahaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhaaaaa

Yes, the console I pull down with the '~' key on the PC version :P

512MB or RAM, lolololol, my Galaxy S2 has better specs! :P

ps: I have been a PS3 owner since 2008...

This made me lol too :D
Nothing against consoles, it was just funny....

The console vs PC war is getting a bit old but just for this one time , i will bite .... or actually not bite , just mention something... (just by the way i game on pc and xbox)
While a xbox might only sit with 512MB , a PC need 1GB minimum just to startup/idle aka before you even do anything ...
So the math would be that you would need 1,5GB just to be on even footing.

I do feel sorry for the people trying to play Skyrim on the PS3. My friend is experiencing these issues, and what's worse, he doesn't have ready access to the internet, so if they do ever manage to patch the problem, it's going to be a schlep for him to get the update.

Depends on the OS but that 1 gig is doing important stuff. Sure the console wont be using that memory but a gaming PC will have about 3.5 gig anyway... and 1gig on the GPU.

Take a lot to convince me that a console with 512MB is better then my old gaming PC with 4.5 gig

They should give him his money back.

If i wanted low memory footprint i would install linux. I want something that i can do everything with, which is why i don't care about the 1Gb+ that the OS is using.

I enjoy both console and pc , im old enough to know i dont have to choose either , i can choose both ;)
This thread was more of a console (Xbox) vs Console (PS3). {and purely tongue in cheek} comment.

Well this sucks :(

I am still waiting for my Skyrim to arrive. That gives them a good couple of days to fix the problem, right, RIGHT?!?

Wait...

So what the feck did they pay the testers who should have inevitably stumbled across this chasm of a problem?

I'm no programmer at all.

But surely they have quite a few options here?

1. A world reset where only items of much value are left alone?
2. Simple reference table the proggy can read to determine who is dead, alive and where. Or a rough reference of what items of value are lying where in terms of coordinates X/Y. Is this how they do it already? Surely it can't take up that much memory?
3. We can all assume the cleaning lady and the gardener picked up a few pencils along the way, I'm sure no one would care.
4. World partitioning/segments. At locations that don't interfere much with the rest of the game of course.
5. Speech should always be linked to completed quests and active status, read and activated only on interaction with the respective person.

^ That and most PC's you get these days come with 2gb of ram.
Most people that intend to game have at least 3gb...

I only have a PC, but what did surprise me is the "flaw" with the PS3. I had always just assumed it was the more robust/powerful of the 2 consoles. I guess it's true what they say about assumption.... :D

ag sorry vir julle man

what bs, ddr3 ram is dirt cheap . no excuses for having 4 gigs of ram :p

and im also stumped that they didnt think of the memory limitations first and then designed around that, blame the console devs and testers for being lazy. (once again)

sadly if ps3 could have mods , i would have made a mod that can fix this ....

carries on playing skyrim in 1080p :p

I wonder if they even finished the game in testing ? Did this game go out to beta ? the mind boggles.

I was reading about the new Nintendo game Zelda, Skyward sword... they have a bug where if you save at a cirtain point you will be unable to finish the game.
Now this is a bit more random because you might not save at that point and then you are ok... the workaround its quite hilarious though !

I still don't get it... all the time and money spent on dev and they can't find anyone able to test properly.
I wonder if the problem is that their testers are too good, they don't have to save the game as often as a normal user, hence things like this never get discovered.

Still no comparison .. in a PC you can pop 8gig in there for under R500 in less than 10 minutes.
You can also upgrade the graphics to keep up with latest the developments.
Or embrace new tech like 3D when it becomes available.

Back to the Skyrim issue, a bit of a slap in the face to consumers considering how much more expensive games are on console.
