Telkom is really visionary - BellSouth considers pay-per-byte broadband

The WSJ reports that BellSouth and other telcos are considering new fee structures that charge users based on the amount of bandwidth they use. Heavy P2P junkies and streaming video fiends would see higher broadband bills than, say, Web- and email-only users.

Aside from the fact that telcos are indignant that content and service providers like Google are making huge money off of their pipes, the article points out that there's one not-so-obvious party that's whispering in the telcos' ears and encouraging them to experiment with new, traffic-based fee structures: network equipment makers.

It is called sarcasm ... something which you have been lacking of late :).

On a side note ... your postings seem to have a rather negative slant of late ... problems in the UK ???.
 
Almost flamed Telkom until I read the article... way to go guys... you *will* p1ss consumers off and be worse off in the long term...

They really don't care ... a "captive" market much like Telkom.

Per gig billing, same thing I guess.
 
As long as there is one telco who won't do this, none of the others will. They all have to do it or none will otherwise they risk having all their customers flee them.

bb in za every1 is paying for every byte that they use.
The fact that they say pay per gig is a non issue. ure paying for everybyte that makes up ure cap.

matt, see the BYTE in GigaBYTE? Telkom has been charging per gigaBYTE (for any traffic, local and international) since November 1, 2005.

There are some places that you now pay 10 cents per megaBYTE you use.

So stop saying almost everyone else on here is lying and go play with your handbag...
