Very interesting, but I guess it won't be good for my gaming (wireless latency and all) and these guys ask a ridiculious amount for their modem, but at least some competition for the evil one that musn't be named...

I am not certain what the latency is like on Wimax, but I think the full package will be in line with or better than ADSL prices. And with a SLA and 14 day installation time it might just be what the market was waiting for.

Interesting that the "minimum" will be 1mbps, putting it at around R800-1000pm with a 3gig cap no doubt. They obviously cant afford to compete with telkom on a sub 1mbps level since bandwidth and not speed (1mbps will be nothing for wimax) is the most costly factor for sentech.
Sadly for sentech, telkom can easily drop the adsl prices far below what sentech can ever dream of offering, and still make a profit.

This is exactly why they take so long to install ADSL and the reason for the 3GB cap... to have people keep on using expensive dial-up!

Sentech haven't been the guys to impose small caps.
From their MYWireless products we see a 20gb Soft-Cap minimum.
There's a good chance they will continue with the trend of decent caps.
Should be good for competition.

Ping is not entirely dependent on the technology used for the last mile, but rather is dependant on the backhaul and core network as well as interconnection to other network providers.

Many people seem to think that wireless inherently has bad latency. This is very, very untrue. I was using a wireless network in Blouberg when I stayed there, and my pings to gaming servers were <20ms (Gamezone) and <50ms (SGS).supersunbird said:

You can have a 1Gbps fibre connection to get good pings - but the routing needs to be good to get good latency.
So basically it's not the wireless technology that causes bad latency, but the routing..

Unfortunately.. with good routing and effective bandwidth management their pings could be usable.. but alas, some MyWireless/iBurst people join on the CS servers and their pings are 250+, even dialup pings are betterLuke7777 said:

I am using Iburst, and I do think that my dialup pings were sometimes better than Iburst. It is known that you can play online with dial-up, well RPG's at least. Whereas i can hardly play anythin at all on Iburst! I know some people can though, if you have a good connection pings can actually be pretty good on Iburst, so WiMax should be great.
Of course given that Sentech can supply the connection with the ping times with the routing etc. But they should improve their latency with the new connection, most (W)ISP's do that, like the new Vodacom 2mbps sercvices etc.

If Sentech plans to roll out this new product without doing any upgrade of their network (increasing base stations), I'm afraid this product will just become another pipedream...
Sentech have expressed many times in the media their desires to expand their infrastructure, although lack the internal funds. I fail to understand then how they can roll out a wireless network to compete head on with ADSL, with minumum speeds of 1mb...
