Sucks, but you have to go with the numbers. The world's population was smaller back then, and that's the music they listened to bought. The population is a few orders of magnitude larger now, and this is the music they listen to and buy now. Not many of the newer generation buys into music from yesteryear.
 
The crap people listen to these days is shocking. I don't even listen to the radio any more as it gives me a headache.

I enjoy listening to Gareth Cliff in the mornings as well as DJ Fresh in the afternoons. But i find myself listening to less and less radio even their shows because of the new "music" out there.
 
When I do occasionally listen to the radio though, I am generally appalled. I'm certain some songs are just music producers literally ****ing with civilization, to see how much absolute non-musical crap we will actually put up with.
 
A lot of it has to do with distribution. Much easier to download a single now and carry it with you than ever before, music has more value for less money. If a band of Queen, the Beatles etc came out today there would be tens millions of downloads.

There are very few actual bands these days though. A lot of it is usually some rapper sampling another song and then rapping his sh*t on top of it (ala Flo-Rida), or "DJs" collaborating with R&B twits (ala David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Pitbull, Rihanna, Leona Lewis etc.).

A lot of the songs I've heard in the past few months on 5fm sound like advertisement jingles. It is ridiculous.
 
Just remember that older music would have sold less that today's popular music, just because there are a lot more consumers now, and consumers are able to buy a lot more now. Girls of the age that buy Justin Bieber **** wouldn't have had access to buying music 20 years ago. So basically, market demographics changed quite a bit.

Currently listening to an old tape of 90s songs I stumbled across. Hopefully the neighbours are feeling nostalgic too
 
And this is why I listen to Prog :)

They work for their money. Are extremely talented, this is almost a forced requirement to be competent in their genre. Often come out with pure gems. You generally get plenty more to listen to in an album. The music lasts! it doesn't get replaced and rehashed.

And hell, most people in this country don't even know wtf it is :D suffice to say there is a shyteload of it available and many bands playing today overseas. Often when say a work colleague or someone asks me what I listen to and I say Progressive Rock/Metal, I am then forced to give a 5 minute attempt of a lecture in explaining it. Often resorting to older names like Pink Floyd and then suddenly they say oooooooh, but are still not aware of what makes it different.

I agree completely, talent is now defined by how well you can f*k up an existing song by adding your own monotone rambling nonsense over it. Its a sad state of affairs. Sometimes when I'm looking for new music I go over the 5FM charts on their website, but the last few years, the top 20 has been utter crap, well admittedly in my opinion at least. I wouldn't have reached the top 20 if that was the general consensus. Even so, I listen to 5FM when I start my car and then switch back to MP3 whenever a song comes on.

That being said, I have found some gems listening to the background music in movies and series, especially top gear.
