The Lions are clearly not happy about the malicious rumours going around thanks to Tank Lanning, the editor of Sport24.

After he posted this on Twitter and his blog:

http://www.frontrowgrunt.co.za/2011/12/truly-bizarre-rugby-news-…/

Then just as I was easing into Club Duvet after a fantastic Beyond Sport Summit drinks and networking evening in Camps Bay, I get the following message: “All Lions Players told only money for salaries until end December. All looking for jobs” …
Knowing it to be information from a reliable source, I Tweet the message … And all hell breaks loose … With the more forward thinking Stormers fans suggesting that those in charge of the cheque books in the shade of table mountain, get moving and snap up a few of those wonderfully exciting young Lions players!
Given that the Lions have been in financial poo for a while, I can well believe this news. After all, Robert Gumede and his partner, Ivor Ichikowitz, the investors negotiating a 49.9 percent stake in the Golden Lions Rugby Union, did not pull out of the deal without reason … Ichikowitz’s parting comment was: “It is simply that the Lions is not being run like a company; it is being run like an amateur union.”
That John Mitchell and his team performed despite this is the amazing, yet slightly sad, side to this story …

The Lions then respond with a statement in which they threaten legal action against Mr Lanning.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union received notification this morning via social networking website www.twitter.com that a rumour has been circulating that the Golden Lions Rugby Union are bankrupt and can only afford to pay their players’ salaries until the end of the month.
The initial rumours, circulated via an individual’s blog website stated that the information was received from a “reliable source”, but would not name the source.
The Golden Lions Rugby Union would like to reiterate the comments that “they are malicious rumours” made on Twitter in response to numerous queries from supporters.
”Statements such as those made by this individual are incredibly damaging as they create an unnecessary sense of unease and panic amongst those within the Union structures. We will not tolerate this and are seeking legal advice”, President of the GLRU Mr. Kevin de Klerk said.
Further statements in this individual’s blog stated ‘given that the Lions have been in financial poo for a while, I can well believe this news. After all the previous investors did not pull out of the deal without reason…’
”The relationship with the previous equity partners did not work out, but the matter was closed on 28 June 2011 and we will not rehash or reopen that discussion”, de Klerk said.
The closing line of the article states ‘that John Mitchell and his team performed despite this is the amazing, yet slightly sad, side to the story’.
The fact of the matter is that the team performed so well due to the stability and continuity experienced within the Lions. The coaching staff and players received support from management and administrators in every way possible, and the results speak for themselves.
”The new equity partners, in conjunction with the existing management, have made numerous changes within the Union’s structures and we are in a better position at the moment than we have been in quite some time. The Union is growing in both strength and stature and rumours such as these started by one individual can potentially undo much of the good work done over the past few months.
”This matter is now considered closed and until we have had formal discussions with our legal team on the way forward, we will not be commenting any further”, Mr. de Klerk concluded.

Some interesting times ahead.

I can tell you one thing. Chance of Tank getting a media pass for the Lions again is like non-existent.

I almost lost my accreditation earlier this year after a seemingly innocent joke about a player.

Now you need to pm me the joke :p

And yes I don't think that Tank did the right thing here.

I will just say it here. He no longer plays for them anymore. And that is the most ironic part of all.

Earlier in the year the Lions came to Loftus and it was just after Andre Pretorius joined up with them again. But on a pay-per-match basis because he was so injury prone.

Pretorius came on in the second half and after a few minutes of play I tweeted something along these lines: "Miracles do still happen, Andre Pretorius has been tackled 4 times and he is still not injured"

Apparently Andre and some of the other players saw the tweet after the game and they took offence to it. I was called before a meeting with the next home game and management told me how unhappy they were. We've come to an understanding since then.

Personally I thought it was a very relevant tweet and applied to the situation. Ironically enough he got injured 2 weeks later and didn't play a game for them again.

My site lost it's accreditation last year May, still haven't been given a reason though
