Cost of Mobile Broadband

I have once again realised how we are being ripped off.

I am in Sri Lanka at the moment (a little technologically backward island in the Indian Ocean) and had to get mobile broadband. So I got myself a sim and subscribed to their internet services. My costs are as following, using exchange rate of 13 rupees to the rand.

Daily rental: R0.28 = R8.40 per month.

This also entitles you to 10MB free data per day. Thereafter you pay:

R0.038 per MB = R38.91 per Gig.

It could be an anomaly of a strong Rand, but surely not his much? Am I missing something, or are we just being ripped off in SA? Then again, am I stating something we don't know?

PS. Quality and speed is on par with any of our ISP's
 
We have the ANC, the rest of the world has progress.
 
The rand could be as weak as it's ever been and you'll still get far cheaper mobile data overseas. It's called a cartel. I'm sure if Telkom had their way (p.s. wow, the irony), we'd all be able to use our ADSL accounts on 8ta's network -- but of course the mobile-data competitors would do all in their power to prevent that from happening. So what happens? We all suffer the consequences of ridiculously excessively high mobile data costs at a big expense to the country's economy, all because this handful of private corporates can get away with it thanks to our corrupt/useless government officials. Welcome to SA, where Consumer Protection Act obviously means to protect the corrupt corporation from the honest & desperate consumer, since it's a travesty that nothing has really been done about this yet???
