4 TB Hitachi desktop hard drive starts selling in Japan

Imagine that sucker crashes :D

While the hard drive industry as a whole continues to be affected by the Thailand floods, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) is ending 2011 on a high note by starting shipments of its first 4 TB 3.5-inch HDD. Codenamed HDS5C4040ALE630 and likely part of the Deskstar 5K (we're guessing 5K4000) series, the 4TB drive has yet to be announced by Hitachi but it can be found on sale in Japan, priced at 26,800 yen (~ US $ 345 / 259 Euro).

Hitachi's 4 TB hard drive has 32 MB of buffer memory, a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface and makes use of the CoolSpin technology, which means its (likely four) platters operate at around 5900 RPM. No word yet on a 7200 PRM version but it's probably in the cards for 2012.

I'd think they would be able to better utilize their R&D by fixing their flooded factories. But that's just me.

Also, they misspelt RPM.
 
I'm not a big fan of Hitachi Hard Drives anymore.
I have 2x 5900RPM 500GB drives in 2 different machines,
and both drives get so hot after an hour, you could fry
an egg on them. :mad:
 
WOOO.. means NAS here can now go up to 48TB .....

... When a manufacturer I trust starts making 4 TB drives and they get stable and cheaper. So a still a while then, but good to see some progress.

It was WD's factories that flooded. Not Hitachi's.

From my experience, Hitachi crashes are worse than the IBM Deathstars. They click click click, and die.
 
Rather get the 2TB drive prices back down from their ridiculously insane current levels first by reducing the "shortage", then start worrying about bigger drives again.

But weren't all the manufacturers affected? Seagate prices also shot through the roof.

Exactly! Direct the current R&D somewhere else...but I guess it lines their coffers so they still pursue higher-priced products rather than giving the consumer a better deal.

Well since WD supplies around 30-40% of all hard drives world wide the others couldn't supply enough. Hence all had to increase prices.
