Telkom Celebrates 3 years as a listed Company, consumers have little to cheer about

can i be the first to vomit........

Telkom Chairperson Nomazizi Mtshotshisa said that at the time of Telkom’s listing, share ownership was generally the preserve of a privileged few South Africans.
blah blah bs blah - unfortunately decent telecomms access still remains the preserve of a privileged few South Africans

“Ordinary working-class people, especially black men and women, did not participate in the country’s wealth. In fact, they did not even understand the concept of owning shares. Together, Telkom and the South African government turned that situation around,” Mtshotshisa said.

I seem to remember something on these forums where at an AGM these "disadvantaged" shareholders had less rights than "normal" shareholders. The original post in this regard may have been by Debbie2 - a memory refresh in this regard would be illuminating.

Any corrections and or support on this statement welcomed.

with relevant qouted piece:

The next shareholder brought up the language issue. He said that the notices of the AGM were not sent in at least one African language. While he was speaking, the Chairperson didn’t seem to be paying attention (I think she was rattled by what alacos had just said). There was an amusing moment when the shareholder stopped what he was saying and asked the Chairperson to please pay attention to him.

The Chair then asked if the speaker was a Khulisa shareholder, and when he said he was, the Chair told him he had no status at the AGM, and nor did he have voting rights. The attitude towards this shareholder was one of ‘sit down, shut up, you’re nothing in this meeting’. Yeah, he’s nothing. Not only does he own part of the company, but technically he also employs you, Ms Chair…or didn’t you know that either??

Legalised extortion, nothing more, nothing less.

Dont pay any attention to what Thabo says, its all just 'white noise'.
If he was serious, his Telecoms minister would've been without of a job a long time ago already.

America and Sicily have the mafia, Russia got their own mobsters, france the union corse. We in SA? We got telkom

Now it's telephone and adsl ownership that is the preserve of a privileged few. I think the masses would benefit more from this than owning a few shares.

And perhaps Debbie could refresh us as to the percentage of disadvantaged shareholders. I heard it was about 1%?

Ordinary working-class people, especially black men and women, did not participate in the country’s wealth.

What a contridiction - the ordinary working class people, not just black people's wealth is being stolen from them. People can barely afford a broadband connection - just look at the penetration rates.

bah, the usual Telkom spin.

All boycotted 3 year party attract no interest

A good source in Telkom tells me the Friday of this breakfast hosted by TKG at the JSE with excuisite 12 table-of-10 decor tralala... Government Ministers, all ICT and Financial journalists, Analysts from many major funds invited to join the exclusive event....
Alas , only two tables were occupied , guess again .... just by Telkom management. Media / Analysts/ Gvt officials etc DID NOT BOTHER TO TURN UP. Hahhaha !!!!!!::p

Of course, Papi cannot be discouraged by the ungrateful media, flew out to New York that night with the entourage to celebrate same "party" in NYSE. For how many years will the anniversary of this listing be celebrated ???

Obituary

Someone should rather make a listing in the Orbituaries.

Yeah, now that's a rather fun idea! :-) Especially, for any of those demo-type art people out there. We get 1 person to put an obituary advert in their local newspapers for Telkom with some well written anti-Telkom verbage. :D

That might get picked up by the media in a follow-up. :D :D

Ummmmm, not sure what it is, and I am not sure how or if the animal consortiums count towards 'disadvantaged shareholders'. I think that 'previously disadvantaged' shareholders make up about 3%.

Thanks Debs. :)
I knew it was a small figure.
Many of those 3% could well have sold their shares?
I remember discussions about this on the forum before. Individual share values were in the region of about R1800. That was when Telkom's shares were worth about R70 or R80. So it could have doubled in value since that date?

3% may be a significant amount in Rand Terms, but divided up between thousands of little shareholdings equates to very little.
Nothing one can retire on. Perhaps one or two month's salary?
