Padayachie promises broadband ‘fireworks'

Who needs action when you've got words.

Only fireworks will be those at the end of year party once the Telkom fatcats received their bonuses.

He confirmed that ministerial declarations based on the recommendations from the telecoms colloquia last year have been prepared and are awaiting minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri's signature. The declarations will be announced in two to three weeks, he added.

Padayachie said he saw no reason why government, as a significant shareholder to Telkom, should not have access to the shareholder agreement between the fixed-line operator and the other SAT3 shareholders

To date, government has not seen the shareholder agreement contract. . .

How is this not possible - the government owned telkom when the agreement was signed. Any money towards the cable would have had to come from the government.

EDIT - I honestly do not understand this issue - how could the gov let the then 100% state owned telkom pay millions of dollars towards the cable without having seen any agreements wrt returns on the investment?

In his keynote address, he noted that government's focus in 2005 was to transform the legislative environment in the telecoms space and introduce opportunities for competition. This year, broadband will be dealt with, he said.

What competition. The only thing that changed in 2005 was that VANS can carry VOIP traffic. And the SNO was awarded its license three years late.

The liberisation process must be done properly before they can move on to broadband.
 
An observer of telecoms conferences, ICASA hearings, government promises and news articles, a layman or man on the street might see this as "fireworks". However us broadband users who have to pay out of our own pocket for exorbitant priced broadband services haven't seen anything happen yet to bring down the cost of telecoms.

At least they didn't say 'IMMINENT'.. then we would be waiting another few years.. :rolleyes:

hey guys, last night i was sitting at Rafiki's (Cape Town) and i saw LOADS of fireworks being fired from the roof of a skycraper. looked AWESOME.

was that Telkom maybe?
