I have a MTN 3.6 Mb/s USB modem and use the 8.ta dashboard to connect using my 10 GB + 10 GB package - I simply close the MTN one and open the 8.ta one instead to log in.

Last night - just before I closed the MTN dashboard - I noticed a Text message alert icon flashing - so opened it to see what it was.

Lo and behold - it was a SMS from 8.ta sent on the 14th of December - informing me that they would deduct the JANUARY 2012 instalment on the 20TH OF DECEMBER - a FULL 11 DAYS EARLY - UNLESS I replied with a 1 to OPT OUT of this EARLY DEDUCTION!

WTF???????

In terms of the CPA - it is ILLEGAL to have a COMPULSORY OPT IN where the customer has to VOLUNTARILY OPT OUT - it SHOULD be the OTHER way AROUND - OPT IN should be an optional choice!

I have now had to transfer funds out of my transmission account until this ILLEGAL deduction has been actioned and rejected - and I will then transfer the funds back on the 30th again - the CORRECT due date.

This IS NOT ON @ 8.ta - you CANNOT ARBITRARILY CHANGE CONTRACT DEDUCTION DATES AT ALL!!!!

8ta isn't the only company doing early deductions. I had a few companies send me similar smses last year and this year. At least 8ta makes opting out easy. With some companies you actually have to call them to make different arrangements.

This should be illegal. Isn't it? After all, when I sign up for a service, I usually sign a form specifying the date on which debit orders will be done each month.

The companies have wisened up to the fact that a lot of people are partying out all their funds over the Christmas period, and then a lot of debit orders get returned unpaid in January.

Still, it is unethical and a surefire way to alienate customers.

Just remember that your bank will charge you a penalty for the rejected debit order.

Yes. Some banks still charge R100-R150 for that though ABSA is something like R10. But Telkom charges around R150 if the debit bounces too!

i dont get any sms's as my modem is permanently plugged into a router
lets see what happens...

8ta rep?

That's ****ing bull ,if I get debited early and charged 100 bucks for it expect to hear headlines of crazed mofo shooting up a bank  Cant believe how much they charge. Despicable.

I recently changed all my debit order dates from the 20th of the month to the first, and when I did this almost every institution told me that the debit for December will be going off on the last working day rather than the first in January. Dunno why...

IMO, get an overdraft facility. You don't have to use it, but in the unlikely event that you DO get an unexpected debit, you won't pay any penalties as the deduction will chow some overdraft, then you can just refill it later. Easy Peasy...

I did not receive this sms nor did I give them permission but they took their money anyway:mad:

Luckily there were funds but not everyone gets paid early in December. Some of us get paid after Christmas so I am now broke. Thanks for nothing 8ta:mad:

mine was deducted as well, poor form eita, no damn communication.

Bloody sneaky from Telkom to deduct the money early....a whole 10 days early.

Just when you start liking them again for the 8ta deal, they come with this crap.

Same boat, they did my debit order today, despite my complaints about it on 17th they didn't respond and debited anyway. I've noted breaches of the contract to them which will allow me to terminate my contract if they don't resolve the issue in 20 days. I've not received monthly invoices, or regularly billing from them which are all grounds for termination of my agreement with them according to the 8ta contract I signed.

I am on the phone with them right now. My debit order also went off last night. This is illegal and contract breach.

While I am waiting for someone to help me, it has been 23 minutes holding so far, the voice prompt said "If you have been double debited, we apologize, the money will be refunded to your account on the 28th of December 2011."

This is bull****. Waiting 8 days to get my own money back that was stolen from me. And nothing was double debited, they are trying to use the double debit angle as an excuse, as if it was a system mistake. Well hello useless 8ta, my normal debit date was 1 December 2011, I surely doubt that 20 days later, 21 December can be seen as a double debit, double debit happens directly or within a few days of each other. You were trying to get everyone's money for January 2012 beforehand, it was not a double debit for December. It was an unauthorized debit. Waiting 8 days to get my own money back, and what about all the interest earned from the millions stolen from clients and kept for 8 days, this surely must be illegal. I hope someone ****s you up for this. You are useless as is your ****in stupid network that has been dropping speed everyday, in the beginning the speed was fine, now everyone is almost complaining, even with full signal, the download speed is slow. Retards

You use less company, I have now been holding for 45 minutes. I was holding for 30 minutes, ended the call and called again, now it's going on 46 minutes. You are thieves for stealing money. Start answering your ****in calls. Pieces of ****.

I'd recommend, going to Telkom/8ta store to speak to someone.
8ta call centre is useless

It could be worse...

You could be like me and have a cellphone contract with 8ta as well as a prepaid data contract.

Since they have combined mine two accounts into one and debit only once per month (without asking or telling me) they deducted my prepaid data package amount AND my cellphone amount (which is admittedly paid in arrears) yesterday...

And I was warned by sms, but nobody invited me to opt-out...

And the submission that I made via the 8ta website has been ignored...

And, not surprisingly, I don't suddenly have access to the data I have already paid for...

Memes are not my thing, but hashtags have been built on less!
