Fixed line operator Telkom said it was asked to make an investment in Portugal Telecom, the country's biggest telephone company.

According to Bloomberg, Telkom is talking to Portuguese businessman Joao Pereira Coutinho about a possible counter bid for Portugal Telecom, the Publico newspaper said today. A group of private equity firms including Blackstone Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts are speculated to have teamed up with Portuguese entrepreneur Miguel Pais do Amaral in a bid for Portugal Telecom, said Bloomberg.

Since the news Telkom’s share price fell to R150,75 from R152,90
 
Telkom has no business looking at new business streams until they resolve service levels & prices of current product offerings.:(

It seems they're looking for new streams because they know they'll loose existing ones. And the new ones are sure to be in captive markets so they do not need to be user friendly with services and prices.

They are missing major opportunities with their approach.
 
They are just taken the money they stole from South Africans and are investing it elsewhere as things start to tighten up here for them.
Heaven forbid, don't ever think that Telkom would actually become morally conscious and invest this money locally in infrastructure to improve the populations access to basic telecoms. Lol that's funny.

It's dropped 20 bucks in the past few weeks.. a rand a day keeps us smiling all day.. lol.
 
Interestingly enough, the SAT3 cable starts at Portugal. So if the DoC nationalises the SAT3 landing point in SA, Telkom could do some shaping at the start in Portugal for traffic going to SA. Anybody else smelling a rat here?
 
Hmmm..I wonder what the impact would be regarding the sat-3 costs.

Would telkom ala portugal be able to charge less to telkom-sa when it comes to sat-3 costs.

Funnily enough the share prices went up quite fast for the portugese telco.
PPl must have been........"TELKOM? who dey?" and then seen the share price growth of telkom. So it's a safe bet for them.
 
Can't see how their bussines model will work in Portugal... lol cutting costs to the bone raping the consumer blind won't work in a competitive envronment, they should rather focus on Africa where people and governments are too ignorant to complain...

Yes. I smell a big one.

Telkom go from having control over just the SA portion of SAT3, to effectively controlling all of SAT3...

I think the SNO should be allowed landing rights to their part of the SAT3 cable. The SNO's global network (as part of VSNL) dwarfs that of Telkom. I can just see a shaping/interconnect war between the two of them.

As I started reading that article that is the first thing that crossed my mind!

So telkom may be forced to give other providers access to the cable, and then just laugh as the cut us off from the otherside...

Is there no way this gaint will fall and die!
