Hi there

Looking for reccommendations as to the best fitness / heart rate monitor. I saw the Polar FT80 which looks decent, but looking for reccommendations from the experts here.

Thanks
Aharon

what do you want to use it for?

swim?, bike?, need GPS?

Timex,Suunto, Garmin,Polar all make decent units.

Hi -

I use treatmill, rowing machine, cycling in the gym. A little running outside on occassion.

What are the best shops to get them?

Thx

I would stay away from Garmin. Their after-sales service leaves much to be desired ... even if you are willing to pay
But like most peole have already commented, it really depends on what you want to use the watch for. If I could choose something right now as an overall training partner type watch I'd look at something in the Timex Ironman range

ive only ever used polar, never had an issue with the actual heart rate monitor.
I have had massive issues with getting the data to sync with me PC.
First was sonic link, then that stupid IR usb thing, now the flowlink...they are all pretty bad.

Still, for accuracy and functionality, dont think you can go wrong with polar.
Try sportsmans warehouse or total sports

I also only have a Polar and haven't had any real issues with it yet.

I downloaded an app from the market

I have a garmin - it's very useful for outdoors running and it syncs very well with a web-based system and google maps. For the type of exercising you are looking to do (ie indoor mostly) the garmin is overkill and when indoors, gps is not always available so, although the heart rate monitor works, your calories can't be accurately counted. It's also very expensive.

A not too expensive polar might be your best bet.

my xmas present to myself was the garmin fr60 fitness watch - its not the gps watch which i dont need, it comes with footpod to count steps and distance, then you have the heart rate strap and monitor and then all kinds of things that I need to learn to play with such as virtual training partner etc

Got a Suunto this xmas. Decent unit and seems to work well for the non-ironman types such as myself. Just use it for the occasional run through the neighbourhood and its seems to work just fine...
