With government and the DoC protecting Telkom with "managed liberisation", it's just a matter of time before they suffer the consequences of their choice.

Do you think the rest of the world is gonna like it if its not broadcast in Hi Definition ? Europe is currently rolling out majorly on HDTV.
They better get their act together and start rolling the DVB-T systems before TV as we know it, is obsolete.

I wonder if FIFA knows about this? Shouldn't we warn them, and tell them to investigate this?
This country is so not ready for the World Cup.
Our public transport sucks.
We have electricity problems.
Our crime stats makes Colombia look like a peaceful place.
We have of the highest internet charges known to man.
Our voice call costs will make Graham Bell spin in his grave.
We have a Government that doesn't realise the country's potential.
Etc

Etc add your gripe to the list.
What we can say is that we have sunshine, cheap beer and biltong. But we need more than that to host a World Cup, but in the end it's all up to Government and the initiative they take in making things happen, but they will probably rely on the private sector to make things happen.

It will be interesting to see who will control the City of Cape Town on Wednesday, tomorrow.
We may find that FIFA may be casting a watchful eye over these events?
It may not be important to some, but the Council voted in tomorrow will have control of the Unicity of Cape Town until after the World Cup in 2010 and it is planning by them that will run Cape Town until such time.

Is there any contingency plans in place if SA fails to meet the neccessary criteria to host an event of this scale in time?
I find myself wondering, aside from broadcasting, how on earth they will be able to ferry everyone around?
There are 3.2 million tickets for the 2006 world cup, I would guess that they can expect at least 1/2 that amount of visitors.
How would South Africa cope with even 1/2 of this?
I'd like to play the optimist, but knowing how poor the public transport infrastructure is, I wonder how on earth they can pull this one out of the bag with just 4 years to go?
The insanity of the construction of the Gautrain is mind boggling, instead of upgrading existing rail networks, which have deteriorated terribly over the last decade, they want to build a shiny new one?
Instead of adding more lanes to the highways and specifically, bus and coach only lanes, they want to waste 20billion rands on what appears, to most educated people, a white elephant from the outset?
Is this supposed to be the answer for World Cup transport in Gauteng?

By 2010, the existing road system will be in a state of gridlock - heck, already the road to Midrand is a disaster area, yet all the budget for the next who knows how many years is going into building a luxury train link?
Well, scr3w me silly and call me a pessimist, I just wonder how long it will be before the first carriages get burnt when the trains don't pitch up on time?
The african way of protesting about delayed services, seems to be to destroy them.
Forget the broadcasting, really, the bigger issue is the logistics of hosting 1 million visitors in a country that struggles to provide public transport for just it's own citizens, hense the taxi issues.

The one road specifically I am referring to is the long awaited M68 West Road that was supposed to connect Bellville in the East to the Blue Route in the West in stages. For anyone living near Plumstead in Cape Town will know of the South Road project. One of the things the new road would have done was also taken the pressure off D1ck Burton Road which was just a plain old residential road, which is now the main track for traffic now as a result of the poor planning and foresight.
The M68 West has enjoyed No. 1 priority by the Engineering Department of the South Peninsula Administration for ages now.
The actual road plan goes as far back as 1965!
The money that was set aside for the project (R6.5million) was eventually spent on Themba Village in Nyanga. A worthwhile project I am sure. But National Government should have paid for this and not the Ratepayers of Cape Town.
Oh Well. Nuf said.
All road upgrades in our area and we are not too far from the Athlone stadium were shelved by the ANC led Executive Mayoral Committee 3 or 4 years ago.

BTTB .... im not so clue'd up on road codes .... However I do think one of the biggest road congestions in Cape Town is the M5 turn off to the N1 and vice versa..... By 2010 if the roads is still a single lane by 2010 it will be a permanant traffic jam....
