i hav the Q1585N Notebook (i5 variant) which comes in i3/i5/i7 variants.

since they come in different variants, is it possible to change the cpu?
also where would i get a mobile cpu from, and who would i be able to trade/sell my i5 processor to

just curious

It should be possible to change the CPU, however you will most likely void the warranty if you do it yourself.

Secondly, I don't know where you can buy a mobile CPU and you'll really struggle to sell your current one.

Lastly, you might have to get a bigger PSU if you upgrade your CPU to an i7.

All-in-all, I'd say rather get a completely new laptop than to try and upgrade the CPU.
What exactly are you using your laptop for that you would like to upgrade the CPU? That i5 that you currently have in it should be more than capable for most jobs.

im an architect and using it at my practice, which i jus started, so funds for a new unit/mac isnt an option at the moment.
usage includes CPU intensive rendering.

For rendering/architecture kind of work, you'll be much better off using a desktop PC with an i7 2600/2600k CPU with a good dedicated graphics card. The mobile CPU's are really no match for it. Ideally you'd want to offload the rendering to the dedicated graphics card, which has like 50x the amount of cores that the CPU has, which really makes rendering MUCH MUCH faster.

As for your current situation: are you sure you're hitting the limits of your CPU and not memory limits?
These CAD applications are really hungry for memory too in most cases, where 4GB won't be enough. Upgrading the RAM is rather cheap (~R400 for 2x 4GB So-DIMM DDR3 1333MHz) and won't void the warranty if you do it yourself.

You can use CPU-z to determine the CPU socket that your laptop's motherboard uses and then you can look for non-OEM i7 mobile CPU's with the same socket, but it won't be easy/cheap.
