Is the Men and Cat stereotype starting to change?

If you asked me what was one of the first things I could remember as a kid, it would probably involve a Cat somewhere...

I'm a 30 year old single guy and I've always loved cats, there I said it. No I'm not gay, no I'm not ugly or fat, no I don't have any psychological issues or peculiarities that I'm aware of.

But ever since my first feline pet until now my deep fascination with these Mammals have always been a big part of my personality and even though I'm not someone who'd accumulate them en masse I'll always turn into an emasculated cat whisperer the moment a kitty crosses my path.

With this there has obviously always been the imminently mocking from Male friends, but recently I've started noticing a change in a lot of guy's attitudes. Maybe it's just because of more exposure to things like social networking etc.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I give a crap what people think (hell, I have a cat and drove a Mazda MX-5 :), safe to say I honestly don't give a ****). I just think it's cool when guys can get over the idea that cats are for girls, because apart from their inherent "cuteness" that's obviously the basis for their feminine association I find them to be extremely well suited as male pets. I haven't seen my 3 year old Tabby take a pee or crap in more than two years (god knows where he does his business). He's extremely intelligent, talkative, entertaining, cheap and effortless to look after etc. etc.

It's been a really tough two years, I've had lots of bad luck and I've been hemorrhaging friendships due to people moving overseas and stuff. But he's always there, being a good friend, keeping me entertained and getting even more interesting as he gets older. So much so that I can't help missing the little bastard if I'm not at home for more than a day or so. Yes, maybe I'm just creepy.

So if there's any dudes out there who've even thought about getting a feline friend, even for a second, do it!

..... let the mocking begin :D

Unfortunately, that definitely includes me at this point in time... :-/

On a sidenote though, you'd be surprised what petting a cat in front of a chick can accomplish... they love that ****.

So you do not have a litterbox for this pest, do not come here complaining when your pest gets hurt.
 
Lived with cats my whole life. Currently have three.

Dogs are just horrible animals.

Like I said, mine is three years old now. He's extremely well tempered and docile.
Do you think getting another cat could be a problem? I've been thinking about rescuing a stray from the SPCA, but I don't want to upset the status quo too much.

yeah I dont get that stereotype either.

I mean if you look at modern online nerd culture, its filled with cat adoration. Look at how many memes involve lolcats or teh kitties. It seems like every time someone posts a photo of their gaming setup, it includes a cat. Maybe gamers are more likely to like cats? I dont know.

I also dont think as many women like cats as that stereotype would lead you to believe either. A lot of women prefer dogs.

Worst day ever was when mine was lost for 3 weeks.
Went to the SPCA each day to check if someone had maybe dropped him off... almost hired a truck to cart away cats. :)
 
Cats are OK but dogs are WAY cooler... they bark at criminals or other people to close to the yard (early warning system) and can also bite the above. They come running when they see you. Cats just laze about and want bellyrubs till they have had enough and then they bite/claw your hand...

Dogs are noisy, dirty, jump on you and slobber. Oh and they crap everywhere. Sis man.

My cats come to fetch me when I get home.

Best to get a kitten. Even better get two siblings.
 
My wife and I share the affections of two cats. We love them dearly. I've had cats since the age of 4 or 5. Our cats stay inside and never go outside unless supervised.

They're all different though.
Agreed that some cats don't seem to be as emotionally "complicated" as dogs are, but you have to remember that in most cases it's because a person doesn't actually understand the animal that well, it's much easier with dogs. Cats also tend to react completely different towards other people, or when other people are around. It's all about getting to know the animal and with cats it's usually extremely difficult to asses their intricacies if you don't know them well. I think that's one of the things that puts a lot of people off.

For instance, I know for a fact that my Cat understands a ton of words or phrases that I use regularly and he reacts accordingly, but someone who's just observing me speaking to him won't notice it since he's too distracted when people are around. He also plays fetch, believe it or not :)
 
I'd love to get a cat that I could take for a walk on a leash one day.
 
Our cats are waiting for us at the door, when we get home in the evening. They demand your attention so I don't understand how a previous poster can say they are not like dogs.

Dogs smell bad and poo all over the place.
