Protest over matric privacy issue

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) said it would burn copies of newspapers carrying matric results at offices of the department of Education on Thursday morning to protest against the publication of the results.

General-secretary Andile Mkhize said the protest would take place in department offices around the country.

In KwaZulu-Natal this would take place in Durban and Port Shepstone.

The aim was to force the government to outlaw the publication of matric results.

The department said there were no plans to do so.

Mkhize said the department should explain why publication of results was important. “Results are private affairs and pupils must not be subjected to the embarrassment of having the public told through newspapers that they have failed,” he said.

KZN education HOD, Nkosinathi Sishi, said the issue was under discussion. But he did not see the practice coming to an end. “Matric results are a public matter.” - The Mercury

No, they shouldn't be private...

They've always been published in newspapers, and if someone is worried that their friends will find out they failed, they should just work harder and not fail.

One could argue that once upon a time, publication was the best way to convey the results. But these days, I'm not so sure. Everyone can get their results privately on their phone these days. No need for publication other than "tradition" like you said...

Its by far the easiest. I remember waiting from 12-3pm on the Government website to get my results, but I couldn't get them. The first place I found out was in the paper. Oh and those SMS things? I got mine 3 weeks later...
 
There should be a national database where these results should be open for all's viewing for all eternity. There's simply too may people that falsify their results.

If they are that unreliable then, keep the publication...
 
Publish and be damned!

If the idiots at Cosas spent time studying instead of burning newspapers they would also pass.

Like Sox said. Most people have cellphones. And if you do not you should ask before the exam you would like yours to be published.


It is still the best cheapest way to do it though.
 
Sounds like they're ashamed of their marks rather. More study less politicking would have helped.
 
It's been public for ages, so why is there suddenly a problem now? Work harder if you don't want to be embarrassed - isn't that the case with everything?
 
The only privacy which should be allowed is surnames and initials should not be printed. Only student numbers, school names, province and marks.
 
The matric results should remain public:

The results are also a measurement of the success or failure of The Department of Education and national government.
The results are also a measurement of teachers /school / Principals performance.
The results are also a measurement of parental success or failure.
The results are also/mostly a measure of the students hard work.

We need accountability. Society needs to know the details of where it fails.

When a country fails to educate a citizen, an depth and unpoliticised solution needs to be found.
We hold parents, teachers and students and government accountable.

The matric results reflect much about our society and culture and government and the future of our country.
 
Anyone know where I can get a list of which subject code = which subject? My son's SMS gives codes like 13301024 and a %, but I have no idea which subject is which (and my son is off with mates, so can't tell me).

Re the privacy issue ... if you work hard & get the results you should get the bragging rights. If you didn't work & didn't get the results ... well, welcome to the real world ... actions have consequences!

Storm in a teacup. Worry more about the state of education than changing a old practice.

You know what pisses me off about it being public. I was on holiday in a smaller town. My parents had friends who was hugely in competition with them and we kids had been dragged into it. Their daughter were always slaving away at the books, me ... well I was a rebel and studied way less, I made good grades but slavery were not for me. :o

I was woken up by them telling me very snooty. At least you passed. It still makes me want to burn down their house :twisted: :mad: I have not seen a news paper at that stage. I did not worry. I knew I passed... them phoning me... :mad: WTH does it matter to them. IMO it should be private.

Ok, but surely they were going to phone you anyway to see how you did? And if you decided not to tell them, it sounds like they would have taken it as "I dont want to tell you cause it wasnt good enough". Either way, they get snooty?

Yeah that's what I thought as well. He would have got the call irrespective of whether the result was in the paper or not. Some peeps just like to gloat. Means effall at the end of the day.

There is so many evil scenario's I could have worked from that angle :twisted:. And they are the kind of whimpering idiots that would not have had the guts to phone and ask.

Even if I lied, it is my results. It is my choice to divulge.

True true. I agree with Wyzak, they should print your exam number. Means only you can see your results, but its still published.
