Has anyone been to it before? I'm going to be in Dubai during the festival this year so want to know whether it's worth the hype and plan accordingly I.e take less baggage weight etc

easy...take cheap clothes and just throw it away if you find you don't have sufficient space
 
Well from my experience at Dubai airport nothing is cheap there except cigarettes. i wouldn't get my hopes up
 
Take some warm clothes, for the ski-slopes

Not the Airport. The annual shopping festival. All the malls in Dubai participate and you can apparently get up to 75% off products. It's from 5 Jan - 5 Feb this year.

I'm mostly interested in getting electronics and gadgets. I usually only travel with a backpack since I hate checking in luggage but suppose I'll have to come back with a checked bag.

As for the ski slopes, I'm keen to try ski Dubai but I've never ski'd (not sure if that's correct) before. Don't want a broken neck to ruin my holiday.
