So,
there is a stretch of the R101 between hammanskraal and carousel view that has steadily deteriorated to the point that the potholes are big and deep enough to swallow a tire and has caused quite a number of cars damage.
The road has been like this for atleast 6 months with no change aside from more and bigger potholes.
With the number of metro cops i've seen using that road, i can't believe that no one in the relative departments know about it.

The funny(sad) part of it is that the stretch that's falling apart was the last section to be redone by the road and safety(?) dept.

Now that you have the background,
i would like to commend the group of men and children that have taken the initiative and started filling the potholes with sand to atleast make it safer for the incredible amount of cars which use that road.
The sad part is that they have no protection aside from each other and people drive recklessly along that stretch even with them there trying fix up the road.

I thought the point of the government selling the highways to toll companies was to subsidise the maintenance and improvement of the alternate routes by the respective government departments.
Personally i think this represents a terrible failure in public service delivery when it's up to the public to do the job with no pay and no support.

I apologise if this post was a bit convoluted and a bit of an over rant, but it really irks me that it has come down to this.

I don't actually live out there, i just use the road a lot going through to the carousel.

Have you raised it with your ward councillor?

Valid question... but you'd have to ask why the ward councillors would not know about the state of their busy roads? Not auditing.. not doing check ups... not caring at all?

Don't know the area at all but could it be that the councillor doesn't travel that route? Might not even be in his specific councillor's area but at least it's your avenue into municipal workings.

Just as an associated side note, but is there no way to report these kinds of things to sanral?

I'm sure s/he probably doesn't as there's a short drive from hammanskraal to get get on the highway, and i doubt s/he pays his/her toll fees.

No, I don't mean that the councillor should drive the route... but that the municipality should have an active maintenance team that monitors road conditions.

You know, that road has been like that since.... I was there in 2006 and it was bad back then. I shudder to think how much worse it is now.
