Lately I'm enjoying blackened death quite a bit.
After many years of enjoying the more extreme sub-genres of metal, I find myself becoming bored of it quite quickly these days. I'm more of a prog fan now - it seems to have a much longer lasting appeal. Any forms of prog metal are interesting though - progressive death / black also makes the cut. :p

I must say, that extreme metal is a bit of an acquired taste and you can get bored of it quite quickly. My first foray into the extreme side of metal was about 9-10 years ago. I thrived on Black and Death metal (and everything in between), but over the years I started becoming bored with it. My tastes turned towards more melodic and progressive metal. In my opinion, it takes more skill and talent to write a good melodic song with some progressive touches than it does to write an extreme song. It's also much easier to growl / screech / yell and make it sound GOOD than it is to have a good (proper) singing voice...

Many Death- and Black Metal bands tend to rehash the same riffs over and over again, so it really DOES start sounding the same after a while. But, like my earlier extreme days, that's what I wanted. If you liked Death Metal, you could pretty much pick up any album from any Death Metal band and be sure to enjoy it... I do enjoy the odd Progressive Death / Black album though (like In Vain - awesome band!). Keeps things interesting. :)

Thats how some of us like it :p Personally I listen for the drums, and the rhythms created between the guitars and drums. The slight changes in the riff or drum line at those speeds are what excites me! The vocals are something that you have to accept when you delve into subgenre upon subgenre in Metal (porngrind/goregrind gets a bit extreme). My opinion is that vocals in metal are an instrument and are used to the same effect/intensity as the drums and guitars.

I was a huge fan of Pantera a few years back but my tastes have grown to be very specific since. Pantera no longer have the energy & speed I look for in Metal, as do most of the bands I listened to years ago. Having said that though, I still get a kick out of the old school death metal sound (prominent though '89-'94) which contain slow heavy riffs and double bass, and blast beats here are few and far between.

Here are the Dutch band, Sinister. Similar to early Cannibal Corpse if you enjoy that sound.

I also appreciate a good rhythm setup in any band. The drums, rhythm guitar and bass should almost form an indistinguishable instrument. You get many bands in the prog / power sub-genres who have excellent rhythm setups. Prog specifically provides very interesting song writing whereby some bands incorporate extreme musicianship with very progressive writing, but still keeping it melodic with clean vocals.

Have you listen at all to Opeth? You might enjoy them. George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher, the vocalist from Cannibal Corpse, is arguably the best in the business at annunciation while doing the screams and growls. You can hear the lyrics very well, although the stuff he sings about isn't something you'd want to hear much of :)

Not going to read the whole thread, but I see you're talking about Killswitch Engage atm.
Tbh I never liked Howard as a vocalist, his voice was lacking compared to Jesse's
Jesse had a lot more emotion in his voice, and you could feel that the music was inspired by past events that lead him to that point. (Rise Inside, Numbered Days, for instance)
Howard, had more of a 'soul' sound to it. So if Jesse is coming back I'll be interested in their new stuff :D

Till then, The Black Dahlia Murder will keep me happy \m/

Just hope In Flames plays their older stuff. Also looking forward to Infected Mushroom. Should be good. :)

Went to Ramfest last year too, saw (http://radio.elektroda.net/pdf/filtry-saw.pdf) Alkaline Trio and Funeral for a Friend (somewhat commercial after all the years, but it was still a gg show)

Some progressive Death Metal from a band with a very short music career... Only 2 albums and one split EP, to be precise, with the first album and debut EP being Black Metal.

EkoTren. A bit of an unknown metal band. The rest of their music has more growling and screaming but this song just does it for me on every single level. They really need to get signed to a proper label. Already their production quality is above par. Check out their 2 albums already out.

A fellow Megadeth fan, awesome!
Disagree on the politics angle though, it's what drives him as an individual and his music. That's who he is, and the best music usually arises from expressing some truth about yourself or a passion. It's been that way from the start, think about Peace Sells but Who's Buying, Rust in Peace, or even Holy Wars, etc.

How have you enjoyed their latest album, Th1rt3en? Personally it's actually one of my favourites. Although I enjoyed Endgame, Th1rt3en really raised the bar, great stuff.

Will do ^^ I have both albums but Deconstruction didn't have the effect Ziltoid had on me (not yet). I mean the first time I heard 'Solar Winds' I felt some very strange emotions ;P

I think Deconstruction will 'click' with me in due time.

Know what you mean - it applies to 90% of all death- and black metal bands. Especially death. I prefer my metal progressive for the most part, hence one of my favourite bands of recent years:
