Cape Town - A Cape Town veterinarian laid a formal complaint with the SPCA against the owner of the Rottweiler which bit a two-year-old girl on Clifton beach in Cape Town, the Saturday Star reported.

ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said at the time of the incident on Wednesday the girl had sustained a puncture wound to her left calf.

The girl underwent surgery on the same day and was discharged from hospital on Thursday, Pretoria News reported on Friday.

Rondebosch vet David Grant said he laid a formal complaint with the SPCA against the owner of the Rottweiler, James Lech, in June last year in connection with a separate incident at the time.

Lech, a "dog whisperer", was apparently black-listed by animal welfare organisations following the complaint.

Grant said he was called out by a client who needed his dog sedated for a trip to Johannesburg, where he met Lech.

The Saturday Star reported that Grant was presented with a dog that had been bound tightly with nylon ropes, could hardly move and was scared.

Grant apparently expressed his disapproval of the animal's treatment to Lech, who allegedly felt such treatment was acceptable.

Grant asked Lech and his client to leave after tranquillising the dog. He wrote to the client asking him not to return to his practise and reported the incident to the SPCA the next day.

When contacted for comment, Lech said he would issue a statement with facts of the matter within seven days.

I just looked at his Facebook page and the website. He looks like he made the whole 'expert' thing up.
 
He's an idiot. Knows nothing about dog's that he didn't learn watching the Dog Whisperer and he can't even apply that information with a measure of basic common sense. So far its two children mauled and an animal cruelty charge but he'll still be back on SA TV talking crap about dogs in no time. The guy is teflon :erm:

Not only that but also an an arrogant pig who probably parks in disabled bays, tosses litter out of his car and ignores robots, stop signs and other rules of the road.
Ditto for when he is on his bicycle.
In short - SCREW everyone else.
 
Hope they sue the krap out of him and put him out of business.

Wow - the dude's website even uses an image of Cesar Milan despite Cesar Milan's website saying this guy is not affiliated to him!

Obviously he is a dangerous quack - hopefully he will get some time to think about that behind bars.
 
Can't you just take a vicious dog whisperer to the vet to have them put down? :)
 
So realistically what actually occured here ?

What did the kid do for the dog to grab her ? I ask this because i have seen kids do some stupid things like scream in dogs face, lunge at dogs suddenly, etc and some dogs simply dont like that, even well trained ones.

And then when one reads the news articles we get this:

All eye-witness reports I have read say the child was not interacting with the dog in any way.

Very similar to the incident in the Jo'burg shopping mall - seemingly an unprovoked attack on a toddler.

Sorry Dude but that is waaaaay too far fetched. One cannot teach a 2 year old on how to behave when a dog approaches them , especially a vicious dog like a Rottie. The dog should have been on a leash at the very least.

My friends were there. They recon that the kid was probably provoking the dog... the thing is, you don't take three big dogs like that to a busy beach and just let them run around. Even if you "know" your dogs, there are other dogs and little kids kicking sand etc.

Apparently they just heard screams and then saw all these people hitting the dog trying to get it off.

Many dogs instinctively "rescue" , and especially with young children, so not far fetched.

Very true, more so if the child has not grown up in a house with dogs or around dogs.

Run away from it, run at it, splash it, throw sand at it, even smiling at it (the baring of teeth to dog is a sign of aggresion or challenge in the dogs mind), there are numerous ways.

Bottom line, an unleashed Rottweiler on a crowded beach is an attack waiting to happen.

Nah , its a public beach where kids should feel safe to play. I just dont see how this can in any way be the Kids or the minders fault. Bottom line , the dog should have been on a leash and now the rottie will sadly pay for the owners ignorance and negligence.

Seeing as this is the second incident with the same handler perhaps the handler needs to pay.

Totally irrelevant. A dog is a potentially dangerous animal that should be on a leash in a public place. If I take a dog out it's my responsibility to make sure it does not bite anyone or another dog regardless of the behaviour of others.

If it were my child I would have moved to kill the dog as quickly as possible.

In cases like this the owner of the dog should be treated the same as if they have negligently wielded any deadly weapon in public. Some jail time would be appropriate.
