Hi Guys,
I have never experienced an ulcer in my life and now it seems 2012 is just carrying off where 2011 ended, with health issues :cry:

This morning I was woken with some pretty quick sharp stomach pains between my chest and belly button.I kinda wrote it off as just bad cramps and took some decent painkillers.During the day I then got some slight lower back pain and the pains come and go as they please. Now I have read up on ulcer symptoms and everything they explain seems to be spot on. I checked online and it seems a product called Nexium helps treat ulcers and acid reflex, but it seems you need a script for this . Does anyone know of any OTC products I could purchase before making a doctors appointment. Last year was just horrendous with spiderbites, dental work and urinary tract infections... It's a bit rough on the pocket at the moment :o

Of course if it gets real bad I have no choice but for now it feels like a small ulcer that should be treated. I also don't want to end up at the doc and then before you know it,it's the x-rays and this and that and $$$$$ later :wtf:

Also anyone have any stories they can share about them or advice  I am not too concerned unless it becomes perforated..but at this moment I am pretty comfortable with the occassional pains.

Thanks and regards

A burst ulcer is very very bad news, my pops only has 1/3 of his stomach left and has to take 1.2k in drugs a month.

My dad's ulcer burst about a decade ago and he nearly died. So it may seem like a small thing but it can go very bad, plus 1.2k is plenty money in a decade, he could have saved himself a small fortune by getting himself checked out instead of ignoring the problem and nearly dying.

Go to the doctor it may be a minor problem or it can something completely different and worse than what you expect.

Lol but these doctors,
they gonna definetely send me for X-Rays . No ways he can just diagnose me with ulcers right there and then?

Yoh...I guess it's literally bread and water for the rest of the month then after the trip to the doc

They'll probably send you for a scope rather than xrays.

If you're going to wait, keep an eye on your stools. If they look black or close to it, get yourself to an ER asap. It basically means your ulcer burst and is bleeding out and you're busy dying (lol).
Maybe just go and see a doc and if you needs xrays or a scope explain the financial issues to him and see if you can postpone that to the end of the month. Or maybe you can get them done at a government hospital.
Remember that ulcers are often caused by a bacteria that can be treated by antibiotics. Antibiotics are allot cheaper than surgery if it bursts.

On the other hand it may just be stress induced indigestion. Seriously tho. Go to the Doctor.

Look for Lenamet OTC, otherwise just ask a pharmacist but get it checked out properly as soon as possible.

X-rays won't help unless i am mistaken but they stick a scope down your throat or up your bum :p. Rather costly and depending on your medical aid it may not be covered. 4-6k but boy it will save you plenty cash down the line if you do have an issue.

You could try some natural remedies such as virgin coconut oil, yoghurt, probiotics, ginger, turmeric, broccoli sprouts etc. Just look around on Google. You should be able to see in a day or two whether a particular ingredient is helping or not.

Hey. I had a bleeding ulcer and was in hospital. Some advice- go straight to the doctor, don't even waste your time with OTC drugs. If indeed you have an ulcer, you will need PPI's (eg nexium) and possibly a course of antibiotics if you test positive for h.pylori (a bacteria which can cause ulcers).

The only way which you can be diagnosed as having an ulcer is via endoscopy (camera down your throat all the way into your small intestine). It costs anywhere between 5-7k. If you have a medical aid or even hospital plan then it may be covered.

But first thing u should do is go see your g.p. If you don't have medical aid then he/she will provide you with what you need to get it done at a state hospital.

Its also dangerous to just assume its an ulcer. A family friend of mine was convinced he had an ulcer, and eventually had an endoscopy which revealed no ulcer. Two days later he had a heart attack....turns out the heart problems were causing similar discomfort etc to an ulcer (the gastroentorologist should have suspected this. Big fail on the doctors part!)

Bottom line: go see your doctor. Hope all is well and you get well soon!

i know someone who got the script meds you mentioned after 1 doc visit & no xrays.

If I remember correctly the meds cost approx R400 & was a month's supply. I can ask later(I doubt I'll be forgiven if I call now)

Should be the generics for lanzor and xanor.

the guy didn't have a car for about 3days(service of some sorts I think) & asked if I could take him to doc & get meds.

The pharmacist offered generic, but he opted to rather take what the doc said.

It was that nexium stuff.

The doc said if that did not help then he'd need to go into hospital for them to look further...

Get tested for cancer asap.friend of my mom had stomach ache that didnt go away.then it went to his back.he died within 3months from cancer. another friend of hers had same symptoms and he also had cancer.they told him he had no chance of surviving, but hes currently undergoing experimental treatment and the tumors are shrinking.like a year later and hes still alive :P

im not trying to scare you.just saying get tested.if it is something bad youll find out sooner rather than later.

Sorry for the necro but is it normal to feel full/bloated and having a weird pain now and then below the sternum in the middle.

As in symptoms of an ulcer

The key behind knowing whether you have stomach ulcer is this: is it more painful when you eat? What type of food makes it worse. After that you have to establish whether it's simple or complicated . The tx involves a proton pump inhibitor,(lansoprazole or omeprazole and two antibiotics commonly azithromycin ,metronidazole, amoxil. If you don't get better on this tx then you need scope and biopsy to check for cancer or zolinger Elison which is rare. The 3 drugs I mentioned work like a charm. But they aren't OTC

I have an ulcer and only using omeprozole. It's S4 scheduled. A few pharmacies gives me without a script, most however insist on one. Had the scope and my doctor writes out a script at no charge as he knows my condition.

He should have given you nexiam and an antibiotic to cure the ulcer.
