Hi guys,
so my gap year is officially over and I did it.A year of lying on the beach and vegetating is complete and I feel refreshed to head back to the city to find a new job. I am slowly starting to apply online for various jobs, but I'm also gonna miss the family when I move :( I am not thrilled to head back into IT Support but unfortunately it is what I am qualified for.

Out of interest though, what was the longest time you went unemployed for? I am staying with the folks who barely pressure me to get a job, but I must for my own good :whistle:

To anyone out there still involved in Support, are the end-users still a bunch of disgusting,ill-mannered gits who treat you like turd ? :D Eish mara

supported both. I cannot recall the number of days I went home depressed at how people can be so intolerant and ignorant when it comes to IT. Vodacom has issues and it's OUR fault. The network provider has a cable fault and it's OUR fault. You just sit and take abuse daily.hahaha made me become such a defensive and disrespectful tit :D
If I end up in Support again, I would rather get payed less and treated better. Yoh I'm getting nervous just thinking about those end abusers

I decided I couldn't do without a paycheque.
 
No ways. I resigned being a techie. Never ever again, will look into something more away from end-users. Headaches every freaking day in support!

That's exactly it bro. The issue is I can really only start over there again and try move up quickly. I would love to completely get away from users but I am not interested in Cisco or Networking,programming etc. It saddens me that what used to be my passion in high school, changed drastically after getting that abuse for 3 years! My passion is video editing but I just need a break somewhere. That is also a bit of a dream because looking at the costs of studying again scared me silly :eek:

At this moment though, I would be pleased to work on a boat washing dishes for minimum wage or even work on a farm doing physical labour. Anyone hiring farm workers out there :D
 
I would love to do graphics design (Adobe products and Corel) be a semi-professional photographer, also perhaps the printery industry.

Not sure how that'd pan out, because largely it'd entail me being my own boss.
 
Haha - I'm going from a Control Centre Operations Manager BACK to IT Support...

Mainly cos they have double my salary since I left - end users are just that, end users. If you let them abuse you, well, then who's fault is it?

IT support (techies or whatever kind) forget that they (we) have the power actually. They need us. If they cannot appreciate us, well then, we'll just focus on those end-users that do and actually thank you for fixing something, etc. and the rest can wait. The relationship you actually focus on are management but in particular, your line manager. If he/she has your back and supports you, then there is no reason to be abused, at all...

Btw - not trying to brag here, but in my position i'm going back to, I'll be clearing 20k - so if you can find a IT techie job that pays like that, take it... ;)
 
Surely clearing R20k is not simply IT Support though?
Manager? Team leader?

I did 3 months ... a very horrible 3 months as I'd only bought my car that same year and had a number of bills to pay

Nope... IT Techie (desktop, network, application support).. i don't do any server admin, network admin, etc. If I want an email address created, I have to log a call. Then i get to go and set it up.

This is for a network of approx. 250 pc's. Oh, they have also employed another person (R12k p/m) to assist with the load.

I will have to do some form of basic pc training, etc. in the future, but for now, straight forward support.

What can i say, I'm blessed ;)
 
Not even once. Started working full time during my second year of varsity as I found the money more appealing than attending lectures. Have been employed ever since - sometimes doing contract work on the weekends as well.
 
18 months after graduation. Then got a government job and used it as a stepping stone :D

yeah myself ..although i started part time work from 5-9 at a call centre during 3rd year and honours and then after that was home for 6 months but worked the part time job still and then a real job
 
16 years too.

But if you mean AFTER I started my first job - from September 10 2001 till Feb 14 2002
