In case one has problems, you can just hop over to the other one of course...
 
Heard about it on the radio this morning, either Jacaranda or 702. They claim the second plane "only followed halfway" :wtf: for some reason, but JFK airport has the recording of the conversation with the tower when the plane came in to land...

One thing that everyone fails to notice, how the hell can a Global Express be used as a safety escort? I don't buy it. It's an unarmed passenger aircraft FFS not a stealth interceptor or rescue chopper. If Zuma's expensive-o-jet is attacked it would be completely powerless and if something failed on the Boeing causing it to drop into the ocean, a passenger jet would also be completely useless as a rescue vehicle. I'm betting it was used to carry some of his less savoury friends/3rd-world dictators/extra wives that couldn't fit into the other one.

Understandable given the significance of his recent trip to the US. Imagine the way we would look as a country when we are supposed to chair a UN Security Council summit and the unreliable BBJ caused crap again and it would have to turn back or do an emergency landing else where.

Just my opinion, you dont have to agree...

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It was probably used to transport all his wives and maybe Bob at the same time.
 
First one ran out of Johnny Walker... need to keep a spare one in the other jet.

What would the second plane have done if something did go wrong with the BBJ? Tow it?

There is no such thing as an unreliable jet... there is only a thing called substandard maintainance. This is akin to blaming the car maker for a crap car while the user didn't follow the service schedule.

As I said in my first post, with a forced landing, he would just jump on the other?

It just came from service in Europe somewhere, so I would think there some concerns from the maintanance people that were not addressed in the service?

I would think then they would never find out if the BBJ is up to a trans atlantic flight after the service? And the extra plane was a precaution it seems. IIRC the BBJ is the only plane we have for State VIPs that can do anything remotely long haul...

@ Mephisto, I'm merely trying to understand the thinking behind it. Then make up my mind if its wasteful or not...

They could have just made the emergency landing and called for the second plane from home to come and get them. Or just taken the Bombardier in the first place, thus saving half the cost. No way a second plane is there for any kind of redundancy or safety.

A defence ministry spokesperson said the second plane landed in the Canary Islands and didn’t continue to the US, although it was reportedly spotted in US airspace.

Something's fishy. He either booked the plane for his concubines so his many many wifes won't find out, or somebody else needed a below-the-radar lift to America.
Either way, they're lying about the true reason.

I figured he'd have at least 10 with blue lights on them.

Are these float-plane jets, or does he swop planes mid-air?
