CellC follows Vodacom’s lead

Oh puh-lease. They say they're giving you back a SMS worth 80c but how much does it cost Cell C? 5c? 10c?

Ja well its worth 80c to you and me.
 
Considering that on pre-paid you can buy a bundle of 100 sms for R39 and that carries over as long as you have airtime, I'd rather get that than call for longer at R3.60 per minute.
 
So what about people with SMS packs? Their SMSs cost a quarter of the 80c mentioned. Will they be getting four free SMSs?

SMSs are very profitable in the sense that they cost only a couple of cents for the networks to send. So in essence, instead of them giving a discount on the call cost they are only a couple of cents out of pocket.

Nothing to get excited about. An SMS is not 'worth 80c'. An SMS is 'worth about 5-10c'.

Maybe useful for people who dont know about SMS packs. But people who SMS a lot will know about SMS packs.

quite. what a load of b@llocks. what kind of a reward is that?!
 
What if you call their customer service line that is free and keep the customer care busy for more than 2 minutes will you still be getting that free sms ?
 
If my maths is correct
7158278 sms at 150 characters per SMS is about 1GB of traffic.
Therefore:
7158278 x R0.80 per sms means we are paying R5 726 622.40 per GB for SMS data.
Conclusion:
We are still being screwed big time. At 3G rates of R600 per Gb we should be paying about 0.008 cents per 150 character SMS.

Interesting calculation indeed vansaware..

1GB = 6,400,000 SMSs (160 characters each)

R600 = 60,000c
60,000c / 6,250,000 SMSs = 0.0094c each
