Yup was a news article on MyBroadBand - I just got my 8ta sim and one of these vouchers today to switch from Voda :-)

Hi Blunt,

Please tell us how BIS service is on 8ta please and if you notice a difference on BIS I have noticed that Vodacom BIS is non existent - works when it feels like. Now with all the kids back at school I am able to surf.

So far it's been ok. Nothing I'm going to rave about; I do notice the BBM's get their tick that it's been sent to the server quicker than on Vodacom. Despite 8ta's website saying I have full 3G coverage the reception at my home/home office is EDGE 90% of the time and EGDE is slow.

Strangely enough I do pick up the mobile network "8.ta" but if I select that network it says "SOS" calls only. I have to choose MTN and then its "MTN - 8.ta" and everything works, a little annoying to have to do this whenever my phone restarts but i'll get over it. I'm going to give 8.ta the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes - after all I have 6 months free BIS with this voucher, Vodacom is pretty crap so it's not like I'm missing out.

PS: I emailed 8ta and they confirmed that if you buy 2x R600 vouchers you can get 12 months BIS, haven't tried but perhaps it'll work.

8ta mostly roams on MTN, it's rare that they have their own towers.
If you choose 8ta, you have to be in range of one of their own towers.
If you choose MTN-8ta, you are roaming and have coverage wherever MTN has coverage.

How does the voucher work exactly - do you go to your local store and ask for the BIS voucher or what cause seriously I am annoyed at beloved Vodacom&their oversubscribed BIS server only now I am able to get things done cos all the kids who own a BlackBerry are back at school and after a certain time its inaccessible.

I am happy to see on edge that your messages get ticked mine never get ticked at all have to wait 5minutes+. If that is the case I am moving end of the month when my subscription ends. 6months free bis worth it as long as they dont deduct airtime if bis is down. Do me a favour check on *180# if you able to transfer airtime if u r then I am going to transfer all the airtime to another 8ta card cos it happen to me on Vodacom BIS server went down and vodacom started subtracing from my airtime credits.

Try to select manual network search mode before selecting MTN. Manual search mode should survive restart. Possible a bug in the firmware too.
BTW, It is normal that you cannot access 8ta home network from prepaid SIM. For some people 8ta signal is even better, but they have to make SIM non-roaming to use 8ta towers. But then they lose roaming to MTN.

aah, ok - so that's what this roaming/non-roaming is all about. thanks

Busy using bis in an area with good 3g reception and I must say its flying, superb compared to vodacom. Using facebook (mobile and app), browsing a few international sites as well as local, all great speeds no timeouts

Hmmm thanks for that Richard, must have just updated it as I checked the website before I emailed them, unless I just missed it

Only the 8ta outlets sell these 600 bis vouchers. You are able to tansfer airtime, I got two sims in case one didn't work (first one I got was a dud) so I tested it out
