My PC computer is being a bit of a douche! I don't care how sexy it is!

Last year I purchased this incredible HP Pavilion DV6 but recently it stopped being so amazing...

Specifications:
-2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7 -2630QM Processor (2.0 Ghz)
-1TB Hard Drive
-8192MB DDR3 SDRAM
-LightScribe Blu-ray Optical Drive
-Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
-39.62cm (15.6'') Diagonal HD BrightView LED Display
-Radeon™ Graphics
-New Mobile Intel® HM65 Express chipset
-WLAN &Bluetooth®

So my problem is, recently I've been getting these odd bugs.. in my start menu the accesories and games directory is gone, however if type for instance "defragment" or ''Character Map'' in the search bar it finds it but I cant find it anywhere in my start menu, and the other bug is that I cannot change my desktop background... nothing works it stays the same...

The catalyst control center also stoped working... if anybody has any ideas or advice.. well that would be awesome!:confused::confused::confused:

Sounds like malware or a virus....

What anti-virus do you use & when last did you scan your pc?

Windows 7 doesnt make stuff disappear.
 
sounds localized to your current user account, create another admin user account, log out of your current user account then into the newly created one, then try the same things.

if the problem is gone, then your hp is still funky but windows7 has become the douchebag
 
I did That and in the new account I made everything is working... but how do i fix this?
 
There are a few ways you could try rectify the problem/s.
But you need to figure out when it happened & was it all at pretty much the same time - if so, a newly installed app could have caused it.
The 3 most likely suggestions are running some kind of registry repair program - I stay away from them, reinstall/repair windows7, or try system restore.

i would probably go with a system restore back to a point just prior to things going "belly up" if you can recall more or less when things went bad.
You can keep stepping back with system restore until you get to where things were right - or if you don't like the restore point you selected, you can always revert back to your current settings.

I have to dash off - so cant continue any further but, do a bit of googling on the user account problem ( remember it is not a system wide issue you have, just on your current user account) but someone else here should be able to assist you pretty soon
 
Thanks for the help gantz... yes i did some googleing but did not prevail... actually its been happening for about 3-4 months now... im scared i might lose files if i restore, and yes i have a regisstry cleanup program... CCleaner and the AVG one... damn!
 
Get MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). It's free, and it's one Microsoft tool that actually works like it's supposed to.
I also suspect it's a virus or malware of some sort, as a friend of mine had the exact problem. I've also had it at one stage.

Easier method, without formatting would be to recreate your user profile.
Create a new user (with Administrator privileges) copy all your data, emails and files to the new profile (after logging into it).

Check if everything is working. Double and triple check that all your data is copied and remove the old user account.

but I did a virus scan and a rootkit scan and it checks out clean
