I bet the Telkom execs. play a lottery and the numbers that come out are the number of gigabytes that they are going to cap the users at

If telkom paid for local/international bandwidth per gigabyte then capping would be acceptable. They don't.
the poll linked to this post doesnt seem right, the answers have 2 tranins of though :

They wont give you anymore info that what they have already , if they say everyone is cool up to 5 gigs people will use 5 gigs instead of the 3 , and if they say the exact figures they will still be digging a deeper hole for themselves in their anti-competitive policies . They cant publish details also because it depends on the amounts that people use each month .
All we want is for other isp's to be able to do the same , or be able to be as relaxed as telkom , imagine if IS said local is uncapped !

I love playing chess. It helps one to view things from different perspective and to look ahead several moves in order to win.
On the one hand, the consumer definitely benefits from this 'relaxed' capping policy. Smaller ISP's will find it hard to attract and retain clients if this isn't addressed soon. Already their profits are tight due to being forced to pay Telkom's wholesale infrastructure at close to retail costs. Imagine how business for them will suffer if consumers decide to all switch to TelkomInternet to take advantage of higher caps.
Why should the consumer care? Well this behaviour does seem extremely anti-competitive when one considers that only larger ISP's can offer this advantage to consumers (as confirmed by Telkom's own statements). Smaller ISP's cannot compete with direct products from Telkom as they need to include their own operating costs over-and-above what Telkom charges them. However, on packages above the standard 3Gb, smaller ISP's are more cost effective than Telkom, but they must charge for extra bandwidth used in order to remain profitable. Should the smaller ISP deem it's no longer profitable to offer ADSL packages (due to lack of consumer uptake), the smart thing would be for them to close down and not compete with Telkom.
That'll only leave the larger ISP's with diversified services / product offerings. With the lack of competition, we enter the same playing-field we currently have with fixed-line communications provisions (and especially with fixed-line International Bandwidth Access). What's to stop Telkom at that stage from choosing to maximise their profits by declaring that the 'free' period is over and that extra bandwidth will be charged for at rates they decide - who you going to switch to if you're unhappy then? The competition will have gone out of business...

Can I sleep at night knowing that I might be supporting uncompetitive practices if I switch to TelkomInternet for relaxed capping? Regretfully they could guarantee uncapped local instead of simply not enforcing the threshold and it wouldnt matter for me - it's called the world wide web for a reason.Moederloos said:
This is the only reason I'm willing to put up with the very limited (but uncapped) access uunet provides. I still need to keep a TelkomInternet account in reserve, mainly to skype with.
Personally I'm getting fed up with having to use all these niche services to get what should be a basic service.
hmmm.... little dilema here. I'm paying R299/mo for SAOL 5GB. How much is the Telkom 3GB account?
I'm really straining at the moment to keep inside the 5GB. At the time of this posting I have 820MB left for the rest of the month.
I don't want to support the beast though, especially with this anti-competitive behaviour. :-(

Telkom holds all the cards , and it bends the rules to serve its own needs over and over again , when will something happen to change all this ? Telkom introduced the local hard cap , and now we must all live with it , yes it can "relax" with its own subscribers , thus breaking the very rules it has enforced , forcing people to join them on the idea that they can get a few extra megs/gigs a month , this has got to be anti competitive behaviuor , it is killing small buisness who because of telkoms hard capping policy cant compete !

Sharing the b/w between those who use and those who dont use a lot ? I had a telkom account a while ago and plundered 80 gig in one month , the rest of the time it was 15 gig at most , the webafrica solution was ideal 30 gig for the price of a telkom 3 gig account , telkom saw what they were doing changed the rules , killed the competition , and could now be doing the same .
Please tell me there is some good news come out sooner rather than later , telkom claims new pricing out at the end of this month and we still have not heard anything new about the SNO , or anything else that can help out the adsl users . Dont forget telkom thought hard capping was the best for us all !!!! So dont be suprised if at the end of the month we might see a drop in price , but the drop in our prices means a few more struggling isps go down the drain .
