Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI says Roman Catholics in the United States need to understand the “grave threats” to their faith posed by what he calls “radical secularism” in the political and cultural arenas.

He addressed visiting US bishops on Thursday and used the same language in warning that attempts are being made to erode their religious freedom.

Benedict did not explicitly mention it, but the bishops have complained their religious freedom is eroding in the face of growing acceptance of gay marriage and attempts to marginalise faith. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has recently formed a committee on protecting religious liberty and hired attorneys and a lobbyist to work on the issue.

The pope said many of the bishops have complained about attempts to deny conscientious objection with regard to co-operation in “intrinsically evil practices”. US church leaders have been pressing for a broader religious exception to part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul that mandates private insurers pay for contraception. The Obama administration has not yet made a decision on the policy and the timing is uncertain.

Bishops also are pressing for broader religious exemptions in US states that have legalised same-gender civil unions or marriage. The vast network of Catholic social services in the United States includes adoption and foster-care placement. Bishops in some states have either shut down adoption programmes or have lost their government contracts after refusing to place children with same-gender couples.

Benedict also expressed appreciation that bishops have been more outspoken about American Catholic politicians who don't follow church teaching on abortion and other issues.

The pope said Catholics in political life have a “personal responsibility to offer public witness to their faith, especially with regard to the great moral issues of our time”.

American Catholics have bitterly debated the obligations of Catholic lawmakers to oppose government policies that go against core Catholic teaching. In recent years, a small but growing number of local bishops have publicly told Catholic lawmakers who support abortion rights not to present themselves for communion because of their stance on the issue. - Sapa-AP

There IS a low level war on the Christian faith by secularists.

Their religious freedom is under attack because of gay marriage and attempts to marginalize faith? I beg to differ. They keep trying to tell people how to live. Other people's freedoms are trampled because religious groups can't keep their faith confined to their homes and churches. They want to shape government policies around their faith. They are perfectly free to carry on worshiping whatever god they like in whatever way they like.

So government is starting to stop protecting their sorry @r$e$. Sounds good to me. Not sure why they expect government to support their particular brand of mumbo jumbo.

What about freedom from religion.

Don't be daft.

The religious are just crying now, because people are not giving them carte blanche to do whatever they want any longer.

I presume from your reaction here, you are supportive of the Catholic church, and unlike most reborn again Christians (which I presume you are), don't think that they are of the devil?

Shame, think you would be more worried about the pedo-priests. I suppose its better to cover up the pedo-priests and attack the non-religious.

Wow.. so they have enough money to feed all the poor people that they can waste money of frivolous law suites!

Gay people wanting to get married -> OMG their iz a war being waged by the athieistsists and secularists! OMG all are bases are belong to them!

Never understood that part. Hey if marriage is a sacred Christian covenant, why dont Christians get up in arms by Muslims calling it marriage? Or Atheists?

Oh cry me a river.

Same sex marriage impacts your Christian marriage in no way whatsoever. Get over yourself and stop trying to tell other people they can't do something that in no way effects you.

Unless it does effect you?... does it make you unhappy when you see 2 people of the same gender married?... do you wish you could do it too but are too afraid of what your pastor and community will think?

In which case I say "be honest with yourself Apache". If you like the cock then shout it from the rooftops. Don't be afraid to be faaaaaaaaaaaabulous!!!! :p

You dont like equal rights do you ;) Tell you what, Im all happy for Christians to hand out Bible`s at school if Muslims can hand out the Quran and if Wiccans can hand out their spellbooks. Happy with your kids getting spellbooks?

“May that little, evil athiest teenage girl and that judge BURN IN HELL!”

“yeah, well i want the immediate removal of all atheists from the school, how about that?”

“Jessica Ahlquist may have won her case, but she’s going straight to hell. #Godovereverything”

A young atheist girl stands up for her rights... and this is how Christians treat her. The problem here is not the not-religious.

Listen, no one wants to take away your right to believe in a big surveillance camera up in the sky, no one wants to take away your idea of believing that the world is 6000 years old or whatever it might be.

We just don't want to believe it. How many churches have been shut down because of secularism?

Horrific.

Equal rights for all and equal treatment from government. Is this really such a repulsive idea to some people? :(

The idea that government can treat everyone equally is inconceivable, but at least they can treat all beliefs equally.

Sounds like the Pope's on another meth binge. Somebody needs to tell this guy that sniffing that stuff everyday causes paranoid delusions. Get some sleep man, and eat something for God's sake. You look like hell.

@ghoti

Say it with me:

"They werent Christians!"

Obviously if anyone claiming to be a Christian does something embarraasing, why, they cant be Christian! Simple!

Well considering he is on his way there the look is appropriate :p :D

You can also say it is a clash between natural law ethics and secular ethics. Although "secular ethics" appears to be somewhat of an oxymoron since there is no common secular definition or concept for what it means to be "good". All attempts at objective and rational secular ethics appear to collapse into meta-ethical moral relativism.

This is kind of ironic since it requires blind faith to trust a person that is a meta-ethical moral relativist. Or to put it differently, there is no reason to trust a meta-ethical moral relativist in a way that is based on reason and logic. Faith is of course frowned upon by many secularists yet it appears one needs blind faith to trust people that have secular ethics.

:wtf:

Pretending natural law ethics aren't just made up. No common non-secular definition of good either.

Don't be TOO hard on secularists. Your family tree will be secular before the century turns.

It's unfortunate for the abrahamic religions, that their demise is due to progress, and therefore inevitable.
