What do you think of Apple's new iBooks 2 and the Life on Earth demo book?
I think it's really impressive quality, and zooming and twisting the movies and interactive content is kinda fun.

Also iBooks Author is super easy to use -- I think this space (text books) is going to get off the ground pretty quickly.
 
I got the Life on Earth book to check out. I don't want to sound melodramatic but I think it's going to change the academic publishing industry.

I think Amazon will be the first to response because this is touching their family jewels;

The outcome I'd really love is a common industry format between Apple and other vendors; I prefer the Apple format re it's flexibility and compatibility with other readers like Adobe ebook reader. Amazon's format for me lacks quality -- for example I bought a few books with diagrams and could not make out anything on the diagrams, encoding quality was way too low (At least Amazon agreed to refund me in all cases and I invested in a PDF version)

It's not flashy tech news, but its certainly important news. Its exciting to see tech companies finally applying their talents to the issue of education. I think we can all agree so much is possible. You see ideas like the khan academy and you quickly realise we are only scratching the surface.

Its a very big deal. I might even go redo high school over the next few days. lol

Anyone else frustrated you took it all for granted, lazily sitting through most of the classes, bemoaning the tired drivel emanating from miss somebody with a bun in her hair. And to think they were actually teaching us stuff, my young self would have never guessed it. :)

Well ....

Both the phone and the tablet were invented before Apple - right?
They revived them and created the market for the devices - right?

However if one had to be objective, one would agree that Samsung have surpassed both Apple phones and tablets nowdays :/ Yes - you own both and prefer the iPad. But there are probably more people that I know that also own both and prefer the Samsung version of the phone/tablet. Just look in the News section for the guys with both and are happy they've got rid of the locked down and blocked Apple products

If it's anything like their Newstand, it's flawed before it's even started.

PS That's pretty much my main gripe with Apple. The locked down nature of the OS and iTunes requirement to do anything. I actually hate having to put files on my iPad simply for that reason. And the guys that have both devices say the same thing as me - it's a breathe of fresh air to use an OS that is not dumbed/locked/blocked

I'm OS agnostic, ....it's a breath of fresh air to use an OS that is smooth, lag free, and polished

To be taken seriously maybe you should try it before slating it.

It's actually quite good and the build model is devoid of 3rd party bad coding (except for maybe the HTML5 / JavaScript widgets), oh and btw its more like iBooks than Newsstand (which in your book should already be +1)

Oh and one last thing you did see a JB's now available for the IPad2 on iOS 5.01 -- ps you'll be able to bypass most of your gripes and have the freedom to delete any file you like, even try a very rough Alpha port of flash -- JB away and try to at least put a smile on your dial...

I don't want to JB ...

I'd love a product to work from the box.

I don't believe in having to fake my address, fake my country and hack everything in order to get the features I want. They're not even 'wow' features either.

The one thing you have to admit is that I've tried ; I've bought a number of applications, I've bought a number of 12 month magazine subscriptions and I've even applied for uncapped ADSL in order to use the features correctly. I'be also just gone over my bundle because I didn't receive the warning SMS ....

Then people wonder I'm a little negative towards it? :/

However - I'll update and see what I think .... all I hope is that it doesn't contain the same bugs that Newstand has

You're only shooting yourself in the foot -- to have the same freedom as rooted Android device allows, on the iOS side we JB.

Try it, if you don't like it it's very simple to just restore your backup before the JB (no harm done) -- I somehow think you might actually like it.

I've tried, African .... it's not like I've slated from the word go.

I bought one ... I bought subscriptions, apps and everything else required ... I signed up for uncapped ADSL ... I've even tried to use flawed iTunes to to be my 'hub'.

But like I said, I'll try

How difficult is it ?

I've read about people on here that wished they never did because of the errors etc they received. It's not quite a click of a button?

Very simple -- go to the iPhoneZA forums for help, lots of people have already JB'd today -- you will also find all the stuff you need to get going -- actual JB takes only a few minutes.

Btw with any custom modification there is an element of risk; there-in lies much of the Android intrigue. If you stay with tried and tested mods you won't experience much issues, also if you use only the Cydia App store to apply the changes then it by default takes a backup of the state before the change I.e. very simple to uninstall any mod if it gives you problems.

There are a ton of mods -- it's pretty much going to be like being a kid in a Candy mod store...

For example: would you like to scroll the pinned icons at the bottom of the screen, simple apply a mod, would you like to have a moving background like Android, simple apply a mod, would you like to have a lock screen like Android, simple apply a mod, .... And so it goes...

You will also find that some products / mods are for sale in the Cydia store, for example: 3G unrestrictor
Don't worry you can save those dimes by adding sources (mod servers) that have a "free" version

And remember if all else fails, you can always restore your last backup before the JB
