Exactly always my point. Caps and speed limits will not improve the situation! Ask any IT expert! Then after the 10 minutes the person will be using the file or data and the network is freed up for someone elses timeslice. At TELKOM restricted services that same 1 gig will occupy the network for much longer. Because there is only so much time per day other users must then wait as the net is slow and overloaded. Also as we pay now per GiG that will be an automatic deterent to download at impunity!

The way I figure it, is a 3Mbps download rate can do 1GB in +-45 minutes.

A 3MBps service can do 1GB in under 10 minutes yes but not a 3Mbps service.

Big B is for Bytes and small b is for bits.

Now which is which. I know Telkom quote speed in Mb/sec because that is the speed my ADSL run on. It cannot be 512MB/sec co's its too slow. Hehe
 
Why moan and say International Bandwith cost are holding them back ?, I may be wrong but Sentech package includes local bandwith as well ? . What they are saying is very true , but the fact that we pay the same for local bandwith than international bandwth is a bigger concern for me

We all know that ADSL is a rip off!
We all know that Telkom is holding the industry and the country by the balls.
So what's new? ehm....nothing.
How about this for news:
1. Telkom agrees to LLU.
2. Telkom removes the ADSL line rental charges.
3. Telkom reveals and shares in international bandwidth.
4. ISPs introduce 3Gb-1024Mbit service for basic usage at R195 per month.
5. Additional International bandwidth is at R10 per GB.
6. And unlimited but subject to fair usage policy 1024Mbit ADSL at R395 per month.
7. ICASA does what they are supposed to do!!!!!!!!!! Today not tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!
Now how hard would that be?!
This is the only way the average South African could afford ADSL and we'd see 1 000 000 ADSL subscribers by 2008?!

I agree, we are seeing more of the same old news. Tell us something we don't know. Telling us that Telkom/Govmint/ICASA are holding us back does nothing but depress us.
 
This manager is smoking his socks. I want to see an end user pull down data at that rate.
 
All data transfer speeds are measured in Mbits/s. Storage is measured in MBytes.
Even at 45 minutes the cap needs to be seriously relooked at and this is something that Vodacom and MTN will have to tackle as well.
What point is a fast network if you can't use it, because if you do you are going to get capped.
 
There is no easy or EASSY solution on International bandwith yet

SA telecoms operators need to develop a strategy together to encourage ,local content

Perhaps we need to differentiate local and international bandwidth in product offerings

30Gb (local bandwidth ) at 3 Mbps + 1 GB (International bandwidth) at 256 k in a package

We top-up which ever we need

Provide options to have fixed IP address ,we can host content localy and economically

Why don't you read the subject of the article and then give your 2c worth.
Point was that there would not be a need to invest your money into technology which is unnecessary and Telkom already has the infrastructure. And yes your money, as Sentech is SA Government owned.
