I am looking for a microUSB cable for my Sony Cybershot DSC-W520 camera. I have tried the obvious outlets such as Incredible, Computer Mania, Sony, various electronics shops, SA Camera and others. This is Cape Town, by the way.

So far, in my quest for a cable, I was offered microSD cards, etc. As per usual, one has to educate the "sales professional" so that he/she eventually understands what you are talking about. Over the past week or two, I have also bought a laptop and two cell phones. The laptop would have been a new one if ONLY I could find a salesman who knew how computers work. So I listed my options and came home with a used Thinkpad in good nick instead and I have saved a small fortune. The phones were bought after I finally located a clued-up salesman who knew the differences between GPRS, Edge, 3G and HSDPA. So I walked home with a new E63 there. The young salesman who could give me the technical low-down on the E63 secured a sale there and then. His name is Robert Hutchison and he knows his products and he is at CNA Canal Walk.

My old camera somehow parted ways with its original box and accessories, leaving me with this quest for a simple little USB cable. I sent my son down to the big mall and he returned exasperated, exhausted, beaten, flummoxed and irate. For starters, having to deal with a sales "professional" lazily draping himself like an adornment over a store counter already gets one hot under the collar. Then to be referred to by said professional, when consulting with his colleague, as "this MAN here wants a cable." English is not my mother tongue and my command of the language with 20,000 words in its vocabulary remains in deficit. I do know, however, that one never refers to a MAN but to a GENTLEMAN.

The end result is the same: they cannot even guess a price although they do have a few different models in stock and they just get rid of the possible sale as soon as possible. Economists read the stars to try figure out where recessions are spawned. It is at the V&A Waterfront's sales counters! Gone are the days of rendering a service with enthusiasm and now we embrace the era where we have to grovel for the right to part with the buck in my back pocket.

Ask them if that phone has Facebook or Twitter, Whatsapp or Youtube on it and they spark!! That is the ONLY "technology" they understand. Oh, and Mxit, of course.

I am a grandpa, grey where not bald, yet I know what the difference between a microSD card and a microUSB cable is! I bought a phone for its business functions and I chat with my young on Whatsapp. But I also know it runs on Symbian, that it can connect to a computer running Linux and that it has usable functionality in the form of an office suite, a PIM and has WLAN if not Wi-Fi (there is a difference) and that it can sync with most PC-based PIM's.

Anyone not knowing what a PIM is, there is Google....................

Meanwhile, if there is anyone out there prepared to part with a MICRO USB CABLE for my Sony Cybershot DSC-W520 digital camera at a sensible price, please do contact me ...........................

I use that quite often... Die man hierso soek mos nou freaking moeilikgheid eksĂŞ...etc etc

In any case, got $2? http://www.tmart.com/Usb-Data-Cable-for-BlackBerry-Pearl-8220-Kickstart_p86840.html
Got one of 'em floating around here somewhere.

Thanks, kl13....but it seems to be a cable for a phone and not for my camera?? $2 is a laugh..... who won't pay that? However, i need to get the correct cable. I will go to MTN, though, and see if the BB's cable will fit. It uses a difefrent interface than that of my E63, though. (When industry standard becomes standard.................)

For the record, a week ago I paid R30 for my **brand new** USB cable for the Nokia E63. Pity the same vendor doesn't stock Sony Cybershot camera cables as well!!

I use my Blackberry cables on a Nokia, a Kindle and a camera. Give it a try

:p. Trying to save him any more frustration

Hehe, would indeed be easier (faster) to part with a few bucks - but it all depends on what cablemania wants.

@cablemania: Are you willing to wait ~2 weeks for the cable? I'll order one for you mahala.

Hi kl13, I am willing to wait, of course! Thanks for your offer, you're a scholar! b:) The only reason why I haven't ordered that specific cable is only because I'm not sure it would fit my camera, as my camera's USB port differs to that of my E63.

Cablemania, are you certain about which cable you need?

Left being Mini,right being Micro

cablemania, I left you a reply here.

MicroUSB, in my experience at least, has been freely interchangeable. The wife and I use a variety of Androids, BBs and other peripherals and we switch the cables and chargers around without hassle. The wife's old Nokia E71 used a proprietary USB cable (might have been Mini USB), but everything since has worked with boggo standard MicroUSB.

Psywulf, no, I am not sure what teh correct description is. All I can say is that it is both narrower and thicker than that of the E63's. And I liked your quote about programming - so true!

Can you see the image I attached in my previous post? from your description it sounds like either a Mini or super-micro ( do not ask,I don't even know what they call it )

It seems to be MINI USB as my E63 seems to have the MICRO USB. Thanks for educating me; now I can educate the sales staff as none know the difference either. I am not into gadgets but into IT (business applications) and I have always used Bluetooth, mobuile broadband, etc. This is the first time that I need physical cables to connect something other than office peripherals.

Hi kl13, yes, it seems to be the correct one! Industry standard............... so you say it isn't simply either MINI or MICRO but a "Third Force" to consider?? No wonder the young ones give up because we older guys cannot agreeupon a standard when we start manufactiring things.
