Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize on Tuesday challenged anyone who claimed to have evidence of a homophobic statement made by the Zulu king to produce it.

Addressing members of the Royal Household portfolio committee in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, Mkhize expressed disappointment at the interpretation of King Goodwill Zwelithini's speech, which he delivered on Sunday at the 133rd commemoration of the January 22 1879 battle of Isandlwana.

According to Mkhize, the Zulu king had denounced any form of abuse, and had not lashed out at gays and lesbians.

The Human Rights Commission said on Monday it would write to Zwelithini to determine whether he had, in fact, made homophobic statements.

According to The Times, Zwelithini told guests in Nquthu that "traditionally, there were no people who engaged in same sex-relationships".

"There was nothing like that and if you do it, you must know that you are rotten. I don't care how you feel about it. If you do it, you must know that it is wrong and you are rotten. Same sex is not acceptable," he was quoted as saying.

The Zulu Royal Household on Monday criticised the "reckless translation" of Zwelithini's speech.

"At no stage did His Majesty condemn gay relations or same sex relations," his spokesperson Prince Mbonisi Zulu said.

All the reporters can't remember what he said word for word in Zulu, apparently what the King said was lost in translation.
 
These idiots always claim they were misquoted or misunderstood. If you can't even articulate yourself in your own language then you must be stoopid.

king Zwelithini is just another leech on the tax system, south africa needs him like it needs another aids patient

I am seriously getting so sick and tired of all these "taken out of context" crap. If you are man enough to make a bold statement, please be man enough to admit that you meant what you said in context. They are all just a bunch of pussies! And a king? **** that. I see him as another useless scared little human being!

Because some MORONS see him as some sort of "king".
 
Why don't they report that the premier has a DVD recording of the ceremony and and the speech. This media is just creating stories where there are none. This is not even a case of words lost in translation but it's a matter of misinterpretation and selective quoting out of context to create controversy.

Here is my translation of what the king said: "If you are one of the people I am talking about, a man who [sexually] abuses another man, a woman who [sexually] abuses another woman, you are rotten.

"Warriors would go to many wars forsaking their women. Zulu men would be gone for days .

"We never heard that there were warriors who [sexually] abused their fellow warriors," King Goodwill said.

Suspicious as I am of the king's intentions in uttering these words, we should be careful about the inferences we draw and translations we make.
