Paying too much for Ford Focus wheel bearing replacement?

Hey guys,

I drive a 2005 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi. After quite a bit of deep humming and vibrations coming from the car I got it checked out at the garage (Kessel motors) in Loop street. They confirmed it was the rear wheel bearings that needed replacing.

I was quoted R3672 for ONE side. Does this seem correct to you? If so why so expensive? and if not could you please point me in another direction?

If it is just the bearings then you are being raped by a half ton gorilla. If it's the entire bearing/hub assembly then it might be normal (suspect this is the case).

Replacing the wheel bearings is actually a very simple procedure, the only thing is you need to take the hub to a garage or something so they press out the old bearing and press in the new one. This is the route I would go, much cheaper than replacing the entire hub assembly.

Online prices vary between US$28 to UK£40 which is no where near the gorillas price (including labour).

I would call some car parts places or even better a bearing outlet like BMG (bearing man group) etc for prices.

also remember paying around R500 for my car's rear bearings.
(bearings, replacement labor, etc)
 
Jeez... and I thought kessel motors were trustworthy, that seems ridiculous. I had my car serviced by the wynberg branch and the quotes for repairs were reasonable.
 
Sounds INSANE!
Replaced both on the Hilux it was R480 each.
Although I know its a bakkie and not in the same class I cant see the 3k + price diff.
Make sure you got ample vasiline. :)
 
Mind if I ask how many ks you done? Also got a focus and would like to know if I will be having to fork out that anytime soon...

Ponder: It is the entire bearing/hub assembly that they quoted on. The initial quote was R8000 per side. R8000!!!!! Thanks very much for the advice. I'm going to forego replacing the whole assembly and just get the bearings sorted. Jirre...That was about to become the rip of the century.. :wtf:

Reactor I'm on 109 000 km right now.

R8000!? Not even vaseline would help for that, the best Castrol synthetic grease might have eased the initial pain though but it will still burn afterwards.
 
ouch, and everyone is going on about Renault parts and their prices!

I paid +-R2000 for a complete rear hub/bearing disc brake set for my '05 Megane II 1.6. And that included the brake pads.
Did the labour myself, so saved some bucks. Walked in, parts where available, paid and did it the following Saterday.

I'll ask a friend of mine @ Ford regarding the Focus parts prices, he'll quickly tell by how much you are worked through the ears!

Autozone sells the rear bearings for R140each, Partquip branding. Many places say you cannot press the bearing out, including BMG and you have to buy the entire hub assembly which they charge about R1200-R1300 (each) depending on who you call. Does your car have ABS?

Your quote of R3672 seems unfortunately in line with the going rate at Ford Dealerships.
I've confirmed it with my mate.

Reassess your view on the car and the condition.
If the discs are worn, and you are due for some brake pads in the near future, and you want to drive the car for the next 3-5 years, do the service.

I was also told not to bother to press the bearings, since my car has done +-130k km's at that time and I was due for some brake pads at the rear. Luckily for me Renault have nice kits (L+R) at a "reasonable" price. If I remember correctly, mine was cheaper than a polo at that time and basically the same as a Auris.
 
The ford focus is unfortunately quite expensive maintenance wise IMO. I used to have a Ford Focus and I really liked the car but after all the costs of replacing parts which were in excessive than all other cars I had, I just could not bring myself to consider getting another one when I was due for a new car.
