Hi Guys

I'm seeing something strange in my car. ASTRA 2005 1.6. The coolant in the reservoir disappears and reappears while engine is running. Engine is running fine but without a temperature gauge () I can't even tell if the engine is overheating.
I'm wondering if I can drive home from work (about 12 kms) before I can get a mechanic to have a look at it. I have checked everywhere and there is no water leaking.

If the radiator is full and the reservoir is full then you 'should' be ok.

I let the car cool down and when I went back to check again. Reservoir was empty.:wtf: Still no sign of leakage. I poured pure water and started the car. The nonsense seemed to have stopped and I could drive home. The check coolant level indicator is also gone and everything seems to be back to normal. I'm really hating this piece of junk right now:(.

It's an Opel :p

/waits for rouxenator to come sing from the opel hymn book

I would keep a very close eye on the water level all the time if I was you.

If you had a leaky gasket then :

1. Your car would piss water all the time
2. Remove the oil filler. Plug, and check on the inside for any white gunk. If it is there, then you got a leaky head gasket.
3. A leaking water pump (which leaks out once there's pressure) is also a possibility. Also, one of the coolant pipes might have a small leak - small enough for water to evaporate before it start dripping.

Check that none of the coolant pipes have been damaged by other pipes - happened to me on my 2001 Astra :

Hey i hve opel astra 1991_2000 its leaking water out by heater inside the car and by overflow pipe now my carpet inside car is wet cn someone plse hlp

Put some curry powder into cooling system which will block the leaks until you find some knowledgeable person to fix it professionally. Also ensure that antifreeze strength is correct to prevent corrosion and system degradation in future. :D

You need to replace the heater matrix. Or you can disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall and plug them.
